Glenn Gould is a legend and no collection with interest in piano or Bach should be without his playing. I never tire of it. He plays with little or no pedal achieving the delicacy of a harpsicord with the depth of the pianoforte. Some scholars and pianists may differ in their appreciation, but I have read of none that fail to respect him.

When I first saw the film, I was too put off by the occasional grossness, but I was still pulled in and through the darkest plot by the hauntingly beautiful music. When I saw the film again, I realized that the film is darker and the music even more gripping than I first believed ... especially after a recent trip to Florence Italy which provides a central locale for much of the plot. The sounds hold the fabric of the film together. On a few tracks, Hannibal's narratives -- powerful in their commanding tones -- provide depth to the music. The final piece, based on Dante's La Vita Nuova, is worth the purchase of the CD itself. The album plays well, many times over. Hannibal's measured, polite evil is uniquely reflected through the tracks. I will ... Read More:

Gould playing Bach? Need I say more? Beautiful and sublime.....Love these interpretations. Wondering why Glenn's own written liner notes were not posted on this CD. He normally included this, unless this was not an official release at the time. I am sure someone can comment on this.

If you are looking for good Beethoven or mozart interpretations, search in somewhere else, otherwise, you will be very disapointed. Mr. Gould did not like these composers and his ungangly playing in their works evidence that. Well, nobody is perfect, anyway...

The sound on the CD is just as good as my old vinyl recording, but the pauses between tracks are either extremely short or non-existent. This invariably proves irritating. I'm not a sound-engineer so I don't know if there's any way this could have been fixed, at least without turning the recording into a MIDI file, which I would cheerfully purchase for playback on my MIDI piano. But then would it still sound like Glenn at the keyboard? Final opinion? I don't own the DVD version yet but i'd try it, if only for its greater capacity.

I've cherished Glenn Gould's Bach Partitas since I first found it from my father's old LP collection many years ago. I've listened to it ridiculosly many times in all formats--cassettes, CDs, and MP3s. (I now always carry it in my iPhone.) Gould's fiendishly exuberant playing is of course classic. He is most successful in Partitas 1 and 4. But his overall playing is uneven, and the recording sound itself is uneven, too. His Sinfonia in Partia 2 is ugly. His Praeambulum in Partita 5 is too fast; Toccata in Partita 6 is too slow and ponderous. For modern interpretations of Bach Partitas on piano, those by Craig Sheppard and Sharon Mann are good. (Sharon Mann's playing sounds somehwat Gouldish, even though she was once a student of Rosalyn Tureck.) For partial Partitas, ... Read More:

Bach composed the French Suites, BWV 812 --817, in his late-30s between 1722-1725 while living in Cothen (before his move to Leipzig). The first five of the six suites were written for Anna Magdalena, Bach's second wife. Opinions differ on the "French" character of the suites. They did not receive the name "French" Suites until the mid-1700s to distinguish them from the "English" Suites. The French Suites tend to be shorter than the English Suites and they lack opening preludes. They also are written in a style that is singing, even galant in places, rather than in a contrapuntal, fugal manner.
Of the six French Suites, the first three are in the minor key and the last three in a major key. Each of the six suites opens with an allemande followed by a courante ... Read More:

I don't really understand why the second book of the Well tempered clavier and the Glenn Gould version in particular, is less loved than first. As bach work the second book is by far more intense and deep. As Gould interpretation is almost perfect, also less idiosyncratic, and astonishing...

After reading "A Romance on Three Legs" I was fascinated by the person the book was about - Glenn Gould. After reading the book I had to hear his piano solos. Now I am hooked!! Glenn Gould's solos are truly wonderful. I put the CD on while I am quilting and the music is even more relaxing than the quilting is - leading to a nice day all around!!
