Herbie Hancock takes classic Joni Mitchell tunes and makes them his own. Who knew that it would work so well? My favorite track is Court and Spark featuring Norah Jones on vocals. This is spell-binding. I heard this track on a plane, and immediately ordered the album. The rest of it is not quite as breath-taking, but well worth it, especially if you like jazz, and grew up on Joni Mitchell.

Maiden Voyage

This was the first Herbie Hancock recording I purchased after The Essential Herbie Hancock. I love everything Blue Note and Rudy Van Gelder, and since I was working on learning the title track, I decided to see what other sorts of tunes Herbie was composing at the time. I think this is probably one of Hancock's most approachable recordings, and while not all five tracks are sparkling lyrical wonders, there's nothing here that might be considered a "throw away track". The title track and Dolphin Dance will stay with you all day after just one listening. This is classic jazz and a great starting point for jazz and Hancock fans.

Head Hunters

Since its initial release in 1973, Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" album has become a fusion jazz classic and rightfully so. Much like his former boss Miles Davis as well as R&B artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock set out to make music that was innovative for its time and pushed the envelope of creativity. Although Herbie had been experimenting with fusing rock, funk and African rhythms with Jazz styles in previous albums like "Sextant" and with his former group Mwandishi, "Head Hunters" is where all the musical styles and experimentation fell together in all the right places.

Thrust

"Thrust" is the ultimate statement by the Headhunters, and ranks as Herbie Hancocks best and funkiest album. Highlighted by the bombastic drumming of Mike Clark (who knew a white boy could groove THAT hard) "Palm Grease" features Herbie's now trademark Rhodes and Clavanet. Yet, "Thrust" features a dominating arsenal of ARP synthesizer's that add awe-inspiring textures to all four tunes. Throughout "Palm Grease"'s 10 minutes Herbie and Bennie Maupin shoot fire over Paul Jackson and Mike Clark's endless groove. "Actual Proof" features Maupin on Flute, and showcases one of Herbie longest electric piano solo's. The melody of this tune is also unforgetable. "Butterfly" is where things get REAL good. Empyrean Isles

If I had a gun put to my head by some quirky jazz-loving criminal who was intent on forcing me to confess which Herbie Hancock album was the greatest, I'd probably flirt with the idea of naming "maiden voyage" and then admit that this one was where it's at. Why? Because like "maiden voyage" the playing here is both inventive and brilliant, but in addition to those virtues this album features an amazing variety that is nevertheless organic. In other words Hancock shows you all the most daring possible moves on the chessboard without trying to play checkers. It's an approach that rewards repeated listening, and as with the greatest of all jazz albums it allows the audience to come away with something new with each listen. The Essential Herbie Hancock

Versatility is the most functional word to describe this living legend. Hancock (1940) is one of these emblematic artists of the jazz who has known to forge himself with untiring vocation to create an own sound, always learning from the greatest (Miles Davis, neither more nor less, Hubert Laws and Dexter Gordon, among others not least remarkable). With his first successful composition( he was in his 22) "Watermelon man", catapulted for Mongo Santamaria in 1963, Hancock established himself as a heavy weight composer and original interpreter in a decade of true giants (Davis, Montgomery, Peterson, Armstrong, Webster, Mulligan, Evans, Getz, Coltrane).

Sextant

Listener beware: this is not your ordinary music fare. I was astonished by Hancock's "Thrust" and "Headhunters" super funk type albums (yes, they were new albums when I was in high school), so I saw this in the racks with the great artwork and thought, "this will be really good". But when I took it home and listened to it I couldn't believe my ears. What am I listening to !? It was totally foriegn to me. Beyond comphrehension. I am SOO GLAD I gave it several listenings. This was a rosetta stone that opened up unknown worlds to me, musically, culturally, and just general thought development. I soon discovered Miles in his electronic period after picking up this album. This "Sextet" group is probably my favorite Hancock period.
