"Heavier Things" is John Mayer's second studio album which was released on September 9th of 2003. The style on this album is soft-rock, as this comes from a period before he transitioned into blues. The album consists of 10 tracks, including the Grammy award winning "Daughters". The title of the album appears to be an answer for those who criticized Mayer's music as being too light.

The album opens with "Clarity", a song for which the meaning is not all that clear, but in general it seems to be about Mayer's self-perception. The second track is "Bigger than My Body" which is about the frustration of not being able to accomplish in reality what one wants to do in their mind, and in particular relates to John Mayer's desire to write ... You want anything good that's acoustic guitar? Get something by Nick Drake or Andrew Collins (or Mandolin, but close), Elliot Smith, Dave Matthews Band (as long as it's not everyday, ick), R.E.M. heck, the Beatles have an arsenal of wicked, beautiful acoustic guitars. He's retiring, by the way.

Not to overstate it, but this is a fantastic release. Maybe diehard fans might balk but as a musician the artistry shown here is exquisite.

I was turned on to "Possibilities" by the Cable/DVD video documentary chronicling the making of this recording.

A very popular production tool these days, letting top musical performers invite other artists to join in the making of a new album by contributing diverse talents, unique styles, etc. creating new and exciting sounds.

Will definitely recommend to friends and fellow musicians!

The Village Sessions

This is a great JM CD if you are already a fan and are looking for that extra acoustic take on some familiar songs. I love the vocal rhythm changes in "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" and the soft guitar in "Belief" I definitely think that this offers a cool, chill feel to John's music, and is a nice tag along with "Where the light is?"

Inside Wants Out

"Comfortable" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Ha ha...that probably sounds a bit hyperbolic, no? I swear, though, it is absolutely arresting in both its melody and its lyrics. I first heard "Comfortable" back in high school (I was one of those Atlanta kids who were lucky enough to catch John Mayer on the upswing), and it nearly stopped my heart, it was so beautiful and tragic. It still has the same effect on me, and I highly recommend it! It's the most original, poignant, and REAL break-up song you'll ever hear. Absolutely gut-wrenching. Amazing. Face-meltingly beautiful.

The rest of the album is also great, but "Comfortable" can only be found on "Inside Wants Out," so I wanted to highlight it in particular. ... Read More:
