Having authored the first "authorized" biography of an anthemic rock group (I Want to Take You Higher: The Life and Times of Sly & the Family Stone, available through amazom), I've been psyched about how music can rouse a nation. Sousa's creations have been fueling that spirit for over a century now, and it's great to be able to hear on one recording what we've heard marching through our streets and across football fields and movie and tv screens all these years, along with a few less familiar tunes. God Bless America: The Ultimate Patriotic Album

I needed a traditional CD of patriotic songs to teach my Girl Scout troop but they wouldn't listen to this one past the first song. It is way to intense. The huge orchestra and the operatic voices,although truly beautiful, will not appeal to a mass audience.

I provide music for water aerobics classes. The class members are typically retirees, and like Classical music, yet until this CD the only Classical music with a beat distinctive and steady enough for water aerobics that I'd found was on the "Hooked on Classics" series. Thus, for water aerobics, this is a find.

Also contributing to this CD's popularity for water aerobics are that: (1) many of the songs are upbeat, and (2) "new stereo" recordings (in contrast to my recordings of Sousa marches that were played by Sousa himself; he died in the 1930s.)

In Summary, were you to buy just ten CDs for water aerobics classes, this would be one of them.

100 Favorite Patriotic Songs

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
