What a rare treat to hear such a wonderful voice! The music transcends the various languages( Latin, Italian, French, Spanish and almost no English) and communicates directly, beyond intellect, deeper to sooth the soul. This we expect from Opera and Religious selections such as Pucinni's "Nessun Dorma" and Lloyd Webber's "Piu Jesu". A favorite is the solo rendition of "Time To Say Good-bye". Orchestrations are as light and lyric as the voice. Some tracks are found on other CD's and the enclosed photos are a bit risque, but again, the music reaches a much higher plane than most. You won't be disappointed.

The Essential Yo-Yo Ma

The World's Favorite Piano Music

If you a piano student, your teacher will probably assign you at least half of the compositions in this CD. You need to hear how they should be played. This is a wonderful CD to use to help you learn the pieces. These piano selections are not the "World's Favorites" for nothing - they are memorable and enjoyable for young and old alike. I love this CD.

Tchaikovsky: Concerto No. 1/Rachmaninoff: Concerto No. 2

I can't call myself an aficionado so take this for what it is worth. The Rachmaninoff Concerto is played during some ad (that I can't remember) and this spoils it for me. Okay so I'm a Philistine But it is a good recording and the Tchaikovsky is great. Refer to the experts (ha-ha) here for technical details. I am glad to have this recording in my library.

The Magic Of Lang Lang

Probably so, since the compilation in this CD includes quite a number of Chinese tracks.
Unlike the 'Dragon Songs' or other albums of LL, this is a hybrid compilation of Western piano music and Chinese works.
LL excels in the Chinese tracks. Some of the tracks are a debut release (by LL, if not universally).
LL's musical upbringing starts from Chinese folk music, not 'Tom and Jerry', though he got in touch with this when he was very young.
The unique musical upbringing of LL has resulted in many criticisms as well as raising many eyebrows in respect of his perfomances and interpretations.
While he basically works in Western countries, he is keenly attracted to music at home, both traditional and modern.

Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 - 4

For price, this is one of the better sets of the complete Rachmaninov concertos to own. This set is a safe set to own if you are not familiar with the works. Andre Previn a notable pianist and conductor conducts the London Symphony Orchestra with Vladimir Ashkenazy at the piano. Ashkenazy is widely considered to be one of the great pianists of our time. All performances are better than average, but there are far better individual performances of these concertos. I recommend Piano Concerto No. 1 with Krystian Zimmerman and Seiji Ozawa, Concerto No. 2 with Benno Moiseiwitcsh and William Kapell with Hugo Rignold and William Steinberg conducting respectively. For Concerto No. 3 I recommend Horowitz with Reiner.
