Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust

amazon.com kept putting this band in my recommended section, so i bought it. then i wondered if i was going insane or whether the dude's english was just really bad. he was speaking icelandic! what the hell? i need to have an idea what the heck they are saying, without having to learn some obscure new language. it is also a little too soft for my taste. i mean, the band has some neat arrangements, obviously they have talent, but the foreign language and too soft tone makes it hard for me to say i really love it.

Takk...

by: Sigur Rós

September 13, 2005
I've been recommended this band by more sources than I can count, based on my deep affection toward Radiohead, Bjork, and others of the experimental variety. I had already heard the somewhat overdone but unquestionably dramatic "Saeglopur," and despite some decidedly odd vocals, I liked it. My hope was that these on-the-edge-of-hearing vocals might mellow out in some slightly more earthly tracks. No such luck.

Doubtless all those who have given this rave 5-star reviews will think this reviewer biased and close-minded. Thankfully, this is not the case. As a DJ and as an avid explorer of the experimental, I love dipping my I-pod into the sea of the unknown, finding bands none of my friends have even heard of and slowly expanding my diverse ... Ágætis Byrjun

by: Sigur Rós

May 22, 2001
The Icelandic band Sigur Ros, by this point in their career, have redefined and expanded their sound enough times to completely avoid categorization. Are they rock? Are they ambient? Or are they simply some breed of sophisticated pop? The only thing for certain is that Sigur Ros aren't afraid of being themselves, and have an awe-inspiring artistic freedom. Throughout this sprawling sophomore album, Sigur Ros created possibly their most accessible and simultaneously memorable album of their careers. The strategy utilized on Ágætis Byrjun is the same that was used on Von and would be used on future albums () and Takk. That strategy is simple. More means more. Which is ironic, because the opening introduction track is exactly the melody that the listener ... Read More:

I was first introduced to this group by the brilliant final scene in the movie, "Vanilla Sky," where the main character makes the decision to "jump" back into the real imperfect world from his taintedly-perfectly-fake-dreamworld he had been living in, and track 4 (my favorite) plays as it shows seemingly-misc flashbacks from humanity's past as he bails downwards off of a skyscraper heading like a missle for the concrete below, hell every time I see that scene I break down in tears. But that's what this album is, tear-therapy, if you want to examine the emotions within you beneath the surface and feel that you need a good cry, put on this cd. I might venture so far as to say it's especially therapuetic for survivors of abuse or those with PTSD, people deciding ... Read More:

Hvarf/Heim

by: Sigur Rós

Sigur Ros has been very busy lately (the last 2 years). After touring endlessly beyond the Takk album around the world, they toured their native Iceland and recorded the experience for a DVD "Heima", which was released last Fall. Just about the same time, Sigur Ros released this collection as well.

Hvarf/Heim (2 CDS; 11 tracks; 73 min.) consists of seemingly 2 completely separate CDs. On "Hvarf" (5 tracks; 37 min.) the band went looking into the archives and came up with tracks scattering from 1995 to 2002. The best in the bunch are "Hljomalind," which sounds like it could've been an outtake from "Takk", even though it was recorded in 1999, and the 9+ min. "Von" (recorded in 1995), as lush yet introspective as anything as the band has done. "Heim" (6 tracks, ... Read More:

Von

Mostly this album is an overblown dark ambient hodgepodge of genre fittings, but occasionally the brilliance that would become this band comes through. Their debut is perhaps the only album where Sigur Ros could actually be heard sounding like something else (quintessential shoegazers Slowdive come to mind) and the only album in their respected discography not needed to date.

Screaming Masterpiece

by: Sigur Ros, Bjork

To people, who are not familiar with the new music from Iceland and Faroe Islands, this cd is one of the best introduction for both countries.
Tolkien gives you the visually image, and by listening to this cd you will get the rest. You will both hear and feel the magic of the mysterious North with wild landscapes, sagas, Northern light and siren song - here extremely well preformed in track no. 8 "Brostnar borgir" presenting the vocalist Eivør Pálsdóttir from Faroe Islands.

Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do

by: Sigur Rós

March 23, 2004
I've read several of the reviews here that both liked and did not like this album, but there was one thing in common with ALL of them... No one seemed to know the origins of the album. In the case of Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do, that is the single most important thing in understanding/appreciating the music. CONTEXT.

American choreographer Merce Cunningham made a dance piece / ballet entitled "Split Sides." The idea was that there were two lighting arrangements, two soundtracks, two of everything that could be interchanged from one half of the show to the other. He got Sigur Ros to write half of the music (Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do), and he got Radiohead to write the other half (music they chose not to release). The music was a collaborative effort with cunningham and his choreography, ... Read More:
