I had heard an review on National Public Radio and since my husband is a big blues fan, I thought I'd try it. This was a wonderful surprise! We love the CD and would recommend it to anyone - whether they are a major blues fan or not.

It should be said that Sonny Landreth is blindingly fast on guitar. Yet, after trying to like this album for more than a week, I just do not. And the reason is that my ears detect no soul at all in his playing. I am reminded of several other virtuoso guitarists (Walter Trout and Johnny Winter most specifically) who make an awful lot of noise, but very little listenable music. I am also missing entirely the Blues aspect of this recording. It's rock-and-roll. A little more attention to melody and continuity, and less fret-finger acrobatics, would help a lot.

The Music Gods have been very generous in sending us Sonny Landreth. This is the album that really puts Sonny on the map. Recorded back in 1995, guests such as Mark Knopfler (he shares lead guitar duties with Sonny on the masterpiece "Congo Square") appear throughout the album. If you love slide guitar, your collection is not complete if don't have Sonny's work. This album is an excellent place to start your collection, because once you hear Sonny, you are going to want to get everything he's ever done.

From opening track to the final note, this cd is fantastic! I have to say that this cd has spent the most time in my cd player over the past several years than any other. That tells you it is one that you can listen to over and over. Sonny gets an amazing tone on his guitar. He is a true innovator on slide guitar using technique that is new to slide players. A Natural World is a great tune, and A World Away is great blues. If you do not have any Sonny Landreth in your cd collection, get this one. You will not be dissapointed. But a warning, after a few listens, you will want his entire collection!

I first became aware of Sonny Landreth in 2005 when he played the annual winter blues series at our local theater. Prior to that I had heard the name, and knew he occasionally played with Jimmy Buffett, but other than that was not familiar with his work. When it was announced that he was coming to town a friend of mine insisted that I go check him out. I did and they guy blew me away. Landreth is probably best known for his prowess on slide guitar, but he really can play just about any style. He hails from New Orleans and to this day there is still a lot of Cajun blues influence to his music. "Down In Louisiana" is a very early Landreth release back when he was paired up with vocalist / harmonica man Mel Melton in the mid 80's. The music is very much Cajun ... Read More:
By the early 90's Landreth had begun to carve out a career as a solo artist. He still was often a much sought after sideman for other musicians, but with "Outward Bound" he proved that he could write and produce some quality music of his own. This is not my favorite Landreth Cd, but there are some great tunes on it. Landreth moves away from his Zydeco inflected roots, but still manages to keep a strong Louisiana Cajun influence throughout much of this album. There is more straight forward rock n roll on this record, and less blues, but that is not necessarily a bad thing since Landreth does both styles so well. Landreth does not have the greatest voice in the world, but for me it works well on the material. Some of my favorite songs include, "Soldier Of Fortune", ... Read More:

I don't have this album yet, but it'll be mine one day, I know. Just based on the 30-sec samples, I gave it 5 stars because these 32-y-o recordings are surely in the upper 20 percent of all recordings!
Not in the upper 20 percent of all Sonny recordings, but very interesting nevertheless. (I stress: These opinions are based only on the samples!) Most of the cuts are far more country, and the blues more rustic, than we think of Sonny today. However, they do give an indication of an unconventional artistic sensibility and sparkling manual ability that have grown into a deep musical vision and phenomenal technique.
I could go on with observations based on these samples and what I know of Sonny's subsequent history, but all I really wanted to say was this: ... Read More:
