Want to know what the world was like in 1963, in San Francisco, on sunny afternoons, when all the windows were open on a garden from a small apartment high on the Ashbury Street Hill where Anne and Stan Rice lived and wrote? --- Before the Flower Children came. ---- Then listen to this classic album, the album that defined "jazz" for me more than bossa nova. It was an album that made me want to flee the foggy streets of San Francisco, put on khaki clothes and drift south. It took me well over twenty years to get to Brazil, and the tunes were no longer in my head. Don't know who Stan and Anne are? Jazz Samba Encore!

I have been searching for this album for 5 years. 5 years ago, I was on Semester at Sea and was spending one of the many long nights at sea (between ports) exchanging music with friends. My friend from Japan gave me several of her favorite Bossa Nova cds, most of them compilations. Of course we didnt have any internet so all the albums that i ripped to my pc said " various artists, track 1 ect.." Well one compilation which is one of my favorites to this day contatined my favorite that I now know is from this album "Saudade Vem Correndo" Wow Maria Toledo's vocals are so... indescribably saudade.

Getz Gilberto

Upon hearing the original vinyl pressing, I wanted to have a copy to put my SACD player to use. I was very disappointed in the mastering of this SACD. THe recording levels were much too high, and there was no dynamic range to speak of. There were even times that I could notice distortion. THis was regardless of volume level or between the high end sony and toshiba players.

Go out and get the original vinyl, and made sure verve records didn't produce it.

Focus

By 1961 when "Focus" was recorded, Stan Getz was a rising jazz star. "Focus" is one of a kind. The strings are not used as "filler" behind Getz's marvelous playing. The Beaux Arts Orchestra does not sound as if they are a "second thought". Their contribution is integral to the magic that is "Focus". The composer Eddie Sauter, who arranged for Benny Goodman, and Getz have successfully united both strings and horn into one joyous celebration of sound. Both Getz's horn and Beaux Arts strings interact in a "call and response" which is why this music is unique among "Third Stream" jazz recordings. Bossas and Ballads: The Lost Sessions

I hate to resort to a cliche, but if you don't like this record, you don't like jazz.

A fine band (a standout effort from Kenny Barron), great tunes, and inspired playing by one of the true greats. I can't help but think that Getz was acutely aware that he was running out of time to say what he had to say.

His playing was always beautiful, melodic and wickedly creative, but twoards the end of his life Getz added a profound emotional power to his already remarkable bag of tricks. Essential.

Stan Getz with Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida

This is my favorite Getz bossa nova album. Almeida is excellent throughout, and his guitar is better recorded and more up-front than Charlie Byrd's on Jazz Samba.

I don't care for the vocals on Getz/Gilberto, and for me Getz works best without vocalists in any case--he is the vocalist. Almeida also has a voice here that's ear-catching, far more so than Byrd on Jazz Samba. I like Jazz Samba as well, but on this album, the players overall "get" the music a bit better (perhaps because it features more Brazilian musicians than Jazz Samba).

So if you like your Getz bossa nova w/o vocals, I'd suggest you start here and then check out Jazz Samba and Jazz Samba Encore--that has some vocals, but they're very good.
