. I Love My Friendsby: Stephen Duffy February 06, 2006 Wow, five star reviews all around for this disc. I have to join the club. This time around Duffy's joined by Aimee Mann and Andy Partridge on several songs. There's a great mix here of dark self-observation (usually by Duffy, his six string, and little, if any, accompaniment) and buoyant pop. "What If I Fell in Love with You?" is a standout track that fades out in a smoky haze of guitar effects and hippychick vocals. (Get out the lava lamp!) Then the disc segues into "Something Good," a jaunty, Beatles (It's Getting Better), Small Faces, Blur (circa 1996) number with a brief a capella ending. Keep Goingby: Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time September 09, 2003 As a fan of Stephen Duffy's work since his "Tin Tin" days, I've noticed a steady progression in his work that, contrary to some reviewers, does indicate both risk-taking and experimentation. In his latest outing with the Lilac Time, Duffy has produced a true masterpiece. Don't be fooled by the faux 70s cover art; this album may have borrowed from the Nick Drake/Fairport Convention folk standards of that era, but it is just as firmly rooted in contemporary music as well. Incorporating a soulful, poetic and sometimes melancholic tone, Duffy evokes moods and images that reflect an ever-growing sense of maturity and poignancy. Big, melodic, electric, and lyrical, the title track is one of his best tunes ever. This is a fantastic album to get lost in. The interplay between impeccable pop and the edgy, modern string arrangements give this album an edge and a depth that, while immediately appealing, also reward close attention and repeat listenings.
