Dear Science,

There was something about 'Return To Cookie Mountain' that intrigued me and I tried repeatedly to get into that record. Ultimately, I came away liking only a couple of the songs but also with great respect for the band's creativity. It was an unusual combination of feelings.

For me, 'Dear Science' resolves that conflict. There is no sacrifice in imagination or creativity and the songs have a more accessible style which peaks in track two, 'Crying'. However, there is no lack of dark sentiment here, both musically and lyrically. In particular, 'Halfway Home' and 'Family Tree' two of the record's highlights, generate a feeling of weird dread and disturbance due to the ideas and pictures they suggest but never fully reveal.

I actually bought "Return From Cookie Mountain" about a year ago, and at the time I was not sure what to make of it.. I enjoyed the material, but I found the album to be generally lacking in emotional content. I sung along, but was also confounded by its mezzo-forte studio-phonic aesthetic. At the time, I intended to write a perfectly apathetic review, expressing my confusion about the fact that I did not like it that much, but I did not hate it either.

I got this CD after Return to Cookie Mountain. At first I thought I liked Cookie Mountain better, but now I listen to this one more. It's great.

For me the first couple of listens to this EP didn't really do a lot for me. But for some reason I kept listening to it, and each time the music revealed more; things I hadn't picked up on in the first few spins started leaping out at me and I really started to appreciate how stunning this collection of songs is. Having said that, I can see how if your not into it, then you mightn't really appreciate the beauty. As I titled the review, this really is about the soundscapes that the band creates, the way that each element interacts with each part, and if you don't get it or enjoy it, then each to their own.

Live At Amoeba Music

I've never been to Amoeba Records. It's one of the things I'm determined to do as soon as possible.

But if I did have access to one, one of the things I'd have done was go to see TV on the Radio's live performance. As it is, I can enjoy their performance secondhand in "Live at Amoeba Music," a kinetic four-song performance in which their music loses NOTHING between studio and live stage.

"From the... DEPTHS... I... called... you, ma/for your breath and breast so warm and fabled/Your hands reached inside/grabbed my heart... enlarged, disabled," Tunde Adebimpe warbles over whirling grimy guitars and solid drums, as the music slowly builds up to a stormy finale.

New Health Rock

I don't see how happy review warrior calls the two new tracks 'more of the same'; 'New Health Rock' displays TvOTR in a newer light. The title track is much more upbeat than anything they'd done at the time, with a hint of surf punk thrown into the mix. 'Modern Romance', cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' song, goes beyond the original version's guitar and drums instrumentation with electronic and ambient influence with truly great vocals.

And while 'The Wrong Way' does work well into the mix, the band could easily have put maybe 'You Could Be Love', an LP outtake, on it for some more substantiality, but oh well, still a great extra couple tracks that really shows the evolution of the band, a necessity for fans.

On first listen, this album is slightly offputting. It doesn't sound like anything else out there. The vocals are high pitched and take some getting used to. BUT...after two-three listens, especially if you read the lyrics while listening, I guarantee you'll be impressed.

This is not an album for a casual listener, but it rewards a good stereo and a good attention span. Utterly brilliant.

TV on the Radio are also fantastic live.
