I'm still working my way into this album, but the Courage track is such pure, glorious, classic, instantly recognizable old-school Todd that it's worth the price of admission all by itself. At twice the price. And Strike, the AC/DC clone tune, is so much better than ANYTHING AC/DC ever did that it's a bonus. Buy this, if only for these two tunes. Hell, buy it if only for Courage.

The Very Best of Todd Rundgren

I remember hearing alot of these songs on the radio while growing up, but never could remember any names that belonged to it. Then recently I heard my favorite song on a classic rock station. Once the DJ announced it as "Bang The Drum All Day", I was all over it. I picked up this CD and haven't put it down ever since. I recommend the working man buy this CD and play it as soon as he breaks out of work on every Friday. It's worth it.

Something/Anything?

I've just finished listening to this album AGAIN. This is pop music at a level that very few artists could get close to. The Beatles could for sure but not many others. There is only one throwaway track which is 'Overture - My Roots - Money...'- I could live without it easily but even this track works in as much as the following song is such a knockout and the contrast is just great.
I have many Todd albums. Love them all but this will always be my favourite. I came to Todd through I Saw The Light which I heard on the radio and fell in love with. A final mention. How beautiful is 'Cold Morning Light'? It's a heartbreaker.

Hermit of Mink Hollow

I pulled this CD out after not listening to it in a while...and could really appreciate on a different level his skill and talent...playing all instruments, singing all the layered gorgeous harmonies...
As some other reviewers have commented, I agree that this is a very melancholy album. Melodic, powerful, and deeply emotional. I had set this aside for so long because when first with the vinyl album, I would play the thing to death, teary eyed in the throes of whatever twenty something angst I was going through. Very real painful time in my life and this album was something that helped me...singing along was healing and crying along was healing.

2nd Wind (Original Recording Remastered)

It's a testament to Todd Rundgren's artistry that he was able to make what amounted to a contract-fulfilling album into one of the most overlooked albums of his career.

Interestingly enough, despite Warner Bros' insistence that Todd make a single-friendly album, they only threw minimum support behind "Change Myself," which might have sunk into obscurity if it weren't for its groundbreaking music video. With the exception of the "Up Against It" songs, the title track, and the blistering "Public Servant," they could have easily made singles out of every song on "2nd Wind."

Still, even if it's not Todd at the top of his game, it's still highly listenable, and I highly recommend it.

with his two previous albums todd had done 'pop'("something/anything") and psychedelic brainstorm ("a wizard, a true star"). for me the 'todd' album beats those as he achieves a mixture of both styles but with a depth that showed what they call 'artistic maturity.'

i heard the album in 1975 and was immediately smitten by it's strange beauty.

lucious melodies ("useless begging"), pop gems ("a dream goes on forever"), various acid noodles ("drunken blue rooster") and gonzoid rock ("#1 lowest common denominator") make for a demanding but transcendental visit into the mind of todd in '74.

it certainly has little of the so-called 'easy' side of todd (ie.'i saw the light').it's visionary,dramatic,bold,romantic and nuts.

A Wizard, A True Star

It will probably surprise most of my Amazon friends to know that I owned three Todd Rundgren albums (Something/Anything?, A Wizard, A True Star, and Todd) while I was still in my teenage years. It's true, and I listened to A Wizard, A True Star more than the others. Without going into comparisions, Wizard represented Todd Rundgren's jump from recording albums that primarily featured pop masterpieces (Hello, It's Me, I Saw The Light) into the world of progressive rock experimentalism and musically diverse albums that still featured a fair sampling of his irresistible pop/rock/soul style. Don't misread "pop" to mean conventional. Todd is anything but conventional.

Nearly Human

Short and sweet review. Except for "Two little Hitler's" which sucks, this is a great album. Great backing vocals, which lets Todd do what he is best at, shape a concept and make fine music.

This is a great comeback from Todd. I can hear that distinctive sound that I have always loved. One of my favourites on this album would have to be "Sweet". Overall, an excellent cd.

The Definitive Rock Collection

Todd Rundgren's music career has been a difficult one to digest. He's a very talented songwriter, but he also loves to dabble in the latest technology. So, as a result, he releases a great album and then follows it with some half-baked piece of experimentalism.

That's why THE DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION is so good. It's the first-ever Rundgren collection to just focus on his great songs, and not try and paint a complete picture of his career. So, you don't get "Born to Synthesize" or "An Elpee's Worth of Tunes" but what you do get is the best, most melodic songs Rundgren ever wrote.
