Maramaros: The Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania
I enjoy this album totally. It brings feelings of country fiddlers as well as classical violin music to me.

I have started a collection of Klezmer music and I have never been disappointed by what I have found here on Amazon. The music is such an intricate part of the Jewish culture and this particular CD will alternately squeeze your heart and make your clap your hands...awesome!

This CD still resonates with me today, Don Byron really tapped into something special in his debut outing, which he hasn't quite been able to capture since. While the CD loosely revolves around his feelings regarding the Tuskegee Experiments and race in general, there are many departures here. The music is as broad as Byron's expansive range of instruments, echoing Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, alto sax and flute. Reggie Workman, Bill Frisell and Ralph Peterson (check out Ornettology from the same time frame) lend stellar support. Hard to believe this was nearly 15 years ago.

The concept of this CD, produced by Brooks Arthur is a commendable one. He knows lots of folks in show business who are Jewish and decided that newly recorded versions of "Jewish" songs would be great. All but one of the 13 tracks on this (somewhat short at 44-minute length) were recorded in 2006 and 2007 by the artists. The lone "oldie" is "Avinu Malkeinu" by Barbra Streisand, which comes from her 1997 "Higher Ground" album.
The CD starts off great with The Manhattan Transfer performing a great swing version of "Utt Da Say" about a tailor making a dress. It had me tapping my feet immediately. Then Neil Sedaka (who recorded a whole CD of Yiddish songs a few years back) slows it down with "My Yiddishe Momme". Smooth jazz meet traditional Yiddish Klezmer ... Read More:

Love this album. Was over in Hungary a few years ago and heard this type of music playing in a museum from original people of the region.

I think that Gutherie's "HAPPY JOYOUS HANUKKAH" CD is great, especially for children. The songs are surely joyous and wonderful to listen to. My only complaint were the addition of 4 pieces ("Gilad and Ziv's Sibra", "Latke Flip-Flop", "Groovy"s Freyekhs", and "Spin Dreydl Spin") that were not written by Gutherie and made no sense for this project.
Still, I would highly recommend this CD>
