The downward spiral indeed. Reznor continues his artistic liberations via no record contracts, although it is becoming more and more clear that, unlike Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails used that platform to capitalize on it's popularity and fan base by releasing sometimes less restrained, but almost always less detailed songs. The Slip works well enough to provide ample counterpoint to his last snooze-fest of industrial ambiance, Ghosts I-IV, with a way more uptempo, rocking vibe, but still continues down a path of sagging mediocrity. Reznor will always be a perceptive producer and offer intriguing soundscapes- even at his most generic or derivative, but it feels like the overall compositional quality has declined.

After releasing a masterpiece "Mythmaker" with Skinny Puppy, ohGr creates the most embarrassing album to date. It is not new, it is not truly experimental, it is just a sad example of the godfather of industrial getting old.
I think the only good stuff we'll get out of ohGr is if Key is creating an album for him.

Highly indulgent release of ambient industrial instrumentals prove that not everyone should be completely free from label restraints. Reznor completely plays into the fanbase with this one, rarely constructing a track out of 36 that rises above mere NIN production exercise.

...after spending a week listening to four Slipknot albums to see what all the fuss was about their mainstream phenomena I realised that most of the time they were reliant on a heavy and repetitive formula at which they only managed to stand out when they were either technically or melodically sufficient...
...now as long as I've known most industrial music has had plenty of repetition to represent the dancey electronica side of them and combining this idea with industrial sounds and heavy and evil synthesisers...I've listened to Godflesh, Ministry, and Aphex Twin (to whom aren't industrial but I feel they take some of the traits industrial has) and have enjoyed the dark and emotionless machinery that they create...so I should love NIN's debut ... Trent is a pure genius. I started becoming a NIN fan after this ablum. And now NIN is my favorite band (and I listen to A LOT of bands), Trust me on this, the songs will give you new meaning to life itself.
Some might think it's difficult, but that all depends on your experience with listening to music. For example, if you are a fan of crappy bands such as Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, or Limp Bizkit... then your better off NOT getting this album. But lets say if you listen to "REAL" music, like..... Portishead, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, LCD Sound Systems, Queens of the Stone Age, etc. Then this album will make your knees buckle and your mouth water. So enjoy.

I realize this is supposed to be Nine Inch Nails best album, but that doesn't mean a whole lot to me, to be completely honest.
For the most part, these songs all sound the same, and more annoyingly, is the *noise* factor of the entire thing. I don't mind a little bit of noise as long as there's some diversity and creativity thrown in the mix, but musically Downward Spiral leaves me completely cold.
It's sad that the rock scene had to change to *this* kind of rubbish by the early 90's, but unfortunately that's what happened.
The lyrics are the ONLY thing that saves this overlong, unbearable album. Even then, the ones involving strong sexual themes are extremely irritating and childish, and anyone over the age of ... Read More:

...I'm going to say this right now...this is the last review of a NIN album (aka Subject B) that I'm going to do for a while...I've listened almost constantly to Trent's work for a week and I'm in need of a change...
...so...Trent sobered up and made "With Teeth" by far their worst album so far...so what Trent have to lose with this? Apparently the instrumentals of this album were made on his laptop during touring and promoting With Teeth...could he possibly keep up the good work with extensive touring and instrumental sample compositioning? Well...they all definitely have an obvious structure if that's what you think...
...Trent has also decided to be less introspective in this album and focus solely on insulting the US government...as ... Read More:

The only reason I chose not to rate this any higher is simply because Reznor has come out with albums at least two stars better than this -namely The Downward Spiral and The Fragile. Standing next to these albums this EP can only earnestly reach as far as three, maybe four, stars. At no point is Broken disappointing but also at no point is it as majestic as the forementioned albums. Definately a strong footnote in the scheme of all things Nine Inch Nails. However I personally overlook Broken when I think about or want to listen to a good Nine Inch Nails record. The reason being I find myself only listening to the best of what particular bands produce and there's so much great music out there. But if you have a profound appriciation for NIN then pick this up; ... Read More:

Beside You in Time is a must watch for any NIN fan. Don't expect to find elaborated material (just the dvd and a one sheet leaflet with some art) inside the dvd case but the show itself makes it worth it.
