There are a lot of bad "Sound Effects" CD's out there. Most are transparent rip-offs of the BBC's multi-volume public domain set, only with bad transfers, digital noise, and bad cut-offs.

This isn't one of them.

This CD is a gift-pack of period vehicles (horse-drawn, mostly), with a leavening of other period sounds, all clear and detailed and just ready to be dropped into a video or used to set the stage in a theatrical production (which is where I've reached for this CD, over and over, as a theatrical sound designer of twenty years experience.)

Not exhaustively complete. Not even a great variety (despite strangeness like the bits of WWII aircraft noises). But just enough, especially if your goal is ... Read More:

Over the years, I've bought a lot of test Cds. I thought the creative peak had been reached with the 1992 release of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test CD from the fine people at Crotchrot Ltd but boy was I mistaken. During my nightly bubble bath I popped The Ultimate Test CD in my player, and I was swept into dimensions I had only read about in Star Trek novels. Bravo!

My friend got this CD (note it's a CD) so if you want to accurately set up a Dolby Digital/DTS system this is not the way to go. If your a beginner or don't really care how your set up sounds then go for it. Everyone else should get Avia Guide To Hometheater or better yet Digital Video Essentials, both sold right here on amazon.com.

I bought this when it first came out. I used to surreptitiously put it on (with volume set high) when I had people over to my apartment. Amidst the conversation they usually wouldn't notice the relatively quiet outdoor noises, then suddenly an airplane would roar overhead shaking the walls, and they would be startled and burst out laughing. It was a pretty nerdy trick but fun.
