Picture yourself in a crowded juke joint or blues bar on the southside of Chicago in the late '40's. Muddy Waters is about to play. He's already gone electric; I mean, he had to, to be heard over all the talking and yelling and what not. His harp player has about blown out a lung trying to be heard over all that din. Walter Jacobs has been doing a bit of experimenting himself, in an attempt to amplify the sound of that little instrument. Tonight he actually grabs the microphone off the stand, bumping it up close enough in his clasped hands to touch the harp. He cranks up the volume and starts to blow. The sound coming out of the amp is unlike anything anyone's ever heard. It's got a deep, heavy, honking, sexy wail, nothing at all like the unamplified ... Read More:

Didn't get excited about Magic Slim & the Teardrops the first time I heard them. Big, greasy Willie Johnson guitar work, Jimmy Reed slurred vocals, same fatback backbeat drums, nothing special about the setlist. Didn't get excited about Magic Slim & the Teardrops the second time I heard them, either, and so on and so forth through a lot of years to the present.
The thing is, during all those years, Willie Johnson and Jimmy Reed were passing away, and other road acts billing themselves as Chicago blues acts either lost track of the attitude or burned out. Magic Slim & the Teardrops are still enthusiastically at it, doing those songs that way because that's what they do and that's the way they like to do them, no matter who or what else they may see ... What happened to the Michael McDonald who produced the great gems in "Blink Of An Eye", "If That's What It Takes", "No Lookin' Back, and "Take It To Heart".
Please stop with the Motown already. I'm from Motown. The Motown sounds were great, and still are, but enough already.
Please come back to "Your" old style. We miss you.

Joe, I luv ya', but when an artist stoops to orchestration it tells me he has nothing else to say. I'm afraid Joe is taking the same path Johnny Lang took. Say it ain't so JOE !!

And even if you don't embrace the drug subculture, you'll find much to interest you in this compilation. You know how all the right wing extremists keep complaining about how things aren't innocent anymore? How all artists sing about is sex and drugs? Well, they're wrong. Quite frankly, music was never innocent. Even mainstream artists are represented here. It's often quite jaw-dropping, and bizarrly pro-drug. The innocent old days? I don't beleive so. An interesting representation of what people thought of drugs in those old days. If you enjoy this, also check out Lucille Bogan. She was a blues artist who in the 20s and 30s sang about sex graphically, and used language and sex talk that'd make Easy E and 2 Live Crew blush. A fascinating, if unessential, album.

I was pretty J L Hooker stupid when I bought this. I only bought it to have a copy of 'Boom Boom'. But this is pretty good stuff. The guy who is mainly into hard rock and heavy metal is finding this very good. There are a lot of good songs encompassing his career. If you are just beginning to delve into the blues, pick this up.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and his music has accompanied me for a significant portion of my life. I'm certain many of us can say that. It wouldn't have been the same without him. I remember one time, looking over at my best friend dancing on my coffee table...
I also miss the El Mocambo that I knew; that small, cheesy, unpretentious blues and rock club that insisted on decrying any temptation to adopt the latest music fashion or decor. I enjoyed many beers there over the years, as have many much more famous than me.
This DVD's marriage between two hallowed institutions now gone is a fitting one. It doesn't have to be the best sound; it just has to be the best. And it is.
