This album simply cannot be beat. You get some of the greatest songs from one of the all-time great post-war bluesmen, Chester Burnett, a.k.a. Howlin' Wolf. If BB King is a fine wine, Howlin' Wolf is a shot of strong scotch. The CD starts out with Moaning at Midnight, a song which will send chills up your spine the first time you hear it....if anyone can be said to have an inimitable voice, it can be said of Chester Burnett.

Personally, I was not sure I would like Howlin' Wolf as I was just getting into the genre of the blues, and so purchased this album instead of his 3 CD box set. Later, I also added His Best, Volume 2, to my collection. In any case, this album (or the box set), is a must have for anyone who loves the blues. ... Read More:

Not Too Late

I first fell in love with "Sinkin' Soon", but have now fallen in love with many other tracks on this CD. "My Dear Country" has become a new favorite, especially considering all of the political debates filling every TV station and Pub lately... can't get away from it! There is a good variety of sounds and influence... some blues, some jazz, a bit of folk, and some hauntingly burlesque beats. And of course, Norah's beautiful voice carries you through each song as if reading tales from a storybook. I highly recommend this CD!

View the bonus track first! Earl Hooker was one of the truly great guitarist. Mississippi Fred McDowell one of my all time favorite slide players is here, but only one performance. Sonny Boy Williamson is in fine form with "Nine Below Zero". Lonnie Johnson, one of the best, is here too! Other of my all tme favorites John Lee Hooker, Sippie Wallace, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters are here also. Lots of performances to study and enjoy!

This is a must buy for all of you blues enthusiasists!! Just wish it lasted longer...I could have watched this all day! The performers were outstanding as well as the audio. For the great old blues music, it could not have sounded better!!

Avalon Blues: The Complete 1928 Okeh Recordings

Mississippi John Hurt recorded only 13 songs before returning to a life of obscurity and hard work on a farm. Of these 13 songs recorded in 1928, 11 were penned by John Hurt with the other two being traditional spiritual numbers ("Blessed be the name" and "Praying on the old camp ground"). The recording quality of these Okeh recordings is simply fantastic, and have the best recording quality I have heard from this era. A little hiss is heard (very little) and not much else.

As to the recordings themselves, they are probably the sweetest sounding, most mellifluous early delta/country blues I have ever heard. John Hurt may not have had the well-known name of a Robert Johnson or Son House, but these recordings have had their influence in their ... Read More:
