I was not a huge fan of Midnight Vultures -- I don't seem to ever feel like playing it -- but almost everything else Beck has done has been genius, and this overlooked album is no exception. It amazes me how something this original and this good didn't get more attention. When I first got it I played it all the time, then I put it away for a few weeks and then had to start playing it all the time again. As the months/years go by, it's earning a place among the albums that will never grow old for me -- Abbey Road, SuperUnknown, Exile on Main Street, The Bends. Classics of all kinds...like Guero.

I first saw The Sounds late at night when I had MTV on. I didn't have the sound up but the video was on and I thought it was archival footage of Blondie, so I turned it up and was more than surprised to discover this gem of a band. I love this Swedish band and was so excited when they finally launched this, their second album. Still holding on to the Blondie new wave sound but adding a few more synths, the sound is tight and The Sounds are simply fun.
The first single "Song With A Mission" and "Queen Of Apology" open the set with a 1,2 punch of attitude, and "Night After Night" is super catchy though I have to say I love the bonus version (a ballady counterpoint to the album track). Once again The Sounds have made a catchy album that ... Read More:

If you're looking to check out Thievery Corporation, this is the place to start. I got into them a few years ago, and this is their best, most consistent album from start to finish. I usually only like around 1/2 of the songs on their albums, but this one has no clunkers. Cosmic Game or Richest Man in Babylon are the next best.

E.X.C.E.L..E.N.T.E.

Functioning exactly as its title promises, "Discography" covers the singles released by The Pet Shop Boys in the span from 1985's "West End Girls" to 1991's "Was It Worth It." While in England, they ran up a string of hits worthy of superstar status, in the US, their run of chart luck ended with 1988's "Domino Dancing" (from Introspective). Perhaps it was their very dry British sensibilities, maybe it was homo-phobia, but listening to this set from start to finish really does make you wonder why these great singles failed to find a home on American Radio.
Granted, the early singles are the epitome of what made new-wave radio in the 80's a blast to listen to, and "What Have I Done To Deserve This" is both a classic song AND resurrected the late Dusty ... Read More:
