Though I love this type of country music I found Tennessee Pusher to be repetitive and way too druggy. I would play maybe two of these songs again.
Not worth the money.

Taj Mahal has all the qualities of a true American, nay, world master musician: vocal and instrumental technique, characteristic personal style, the curiosity of exploration, the fearlessness of experimentation, wisdom, and group leadship. Listening to this wide-ranging CD, I was struck with how many blues styles he captured, from country to urban, from the Deep South to the Caribbean to West Africa, at home on banjo, harmonica, and acoustic and electric guitars. With the great group Los Lobos and also the Phantom Blues Band and Ziggy Marley's Band as support, we take a grand tour of a great musical soul, the result of decades of learning. Having first heard Taj Mahal 40 years ago and enjoyed his works over the ensuing years, I regard this album ... Read More:

I purchased this cd shortly after it came out. It is a cd I put on when I want to gentle my mind. Her voice is warm and her phrasing is perfection. Every time winter comes around I listen to her constantly..Especially if it's rainy and cold. Her music just beckons for a glass of warm wine and a good book. A must have for any music lover. The songs "don't know why" & "come away with me" illustrate the great things about being in love and all of it's dynamics.

I was raised on singer-songwriters of the 60's and 70s'. When the 80's rolled around I left popular music for good. Hearing the stuff my kids were listening to lately didn't change my mind. Then I heard Ingrid Michaelson's work on a commercial, dug around and found that the great singer-songwriters haven't gone away after all. I bought the CD and enjoy it more each time I listen to it.

I saw recommendations for this album on Brandi Carlile and Colbie Caillat's pages so I gave it a shot without sampling first. What a mistake. The first time I listened to the album, I was instantly turned off. The lyrics were predictable. If rhymey was a word, it would be very fitting. I thought I may have been a bit harsh at first so I gave it another shot. Same reaction. I will be trading in this album.

When I thought about buying this album, I was torn between it and the soundtrack from the movie "Once". I decided to get this because I felt like it would have more of an album feel. That it does. Listening to this album is like following the songwriters through a cohesive story of the character they created. Every song is passionate/wonderful/beautiful. Especially the Marketa Irglova instrumental(s). The art in the liner notes is pretty cool, too.

Mellencamp is my favorite solo artist. I like and own everything he has ever done, so I am probably not the most objective reviewer of his work.
Mellencamp has really come into a new realm of creativity over the past few years. This record demonstrates an amazing amount of depth, range, and musical mastery.
I liked his last album (Freedom's Road) better, but comparing the two would not be entirely fair. They are very different records all around. Freedom's Road was more "Mellencampy." This one was meant to be more solemn and flat out sad.
My favorite tracks are Longest Days and A Ride Back Home. Longest Days may well be one of the top ten best songs he has ever written. My least favorite tracks are John Cockers ... Read More:

I first heard some of this music in the 1960's when I was still living in England and my best friend had gone to South Africa for a year. She sent me a single with 'The Click Song' on it, because of apartheid she wasn't supposed to do that. I'm glad she did because Miriam Makeba has a beautiful crystal-like voice which moves me to this day. I don't understand any of the words, but manage to sing along anyway! This is a happy, uplifting CD, certainly worth owning.
