There is a combustible quality about KT's music. Starting with her voice,
the music jumps out at you. Strong one moment, lilting the next, it is mesmerizing. The art of a great singer-songwriter for me is captured when the artist can combine substantive lyrics with melodic catchy sounds that stay with you...this is not always an easy combination to find. KT has met my test along with the great Lucinda Williams and relative newcomer Arrica Rose in her new album La La Lost.My favorites on the album are "Black Horse and Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See."

Two discs, 3+ hours. If you are a true SP fan, you will enjoy this. In my opinion, Gossamer is the best song and Rose March is up there too. Don't expect the Pumpkins from your teenage years. Move on....

Nirvana? Pearl Jam? Alice In Chains? Yeah, they all suck. They should be bowing down to Mr.Daughtry for making such an incredible album. This is a classic grunge album, along with "All The Right Reasons" by Nickleback. "Nevermind" by Nirvana is garbage. This is what REAL grunge sounds like.

Love most of the album then and now. Didn't really understand, though, how much coulda been used elsewhere (like the "White Album"), and how much - not alot - came from other places: Come Together with its' Chuck Berry reference really driving the whole thing; Something, impossible without James Taylor's classic; Oh Darling, yet another Little Richard tribute while Richard was without a recording contract.
Some other curiosities: Mean Mr. Mustard & Maxwell's Silver Hammer (c'mon Paul!); I Want You (She's So Heavy) - a nice soundtrack for a bad Buster Crabbe pirate movie.
Which leaves up with the gems: above mentioned classic A and B side; Here Comes The Sun, You Never Give Me Your Money, Because.
And just like the double-album, we're ... Read More:

Probably the only rap-metal album that honestly qualifies as any good, and definitely the most violently liberal album I've ever heard in my life. Not like I mind, of course. But if you don't agree with the politics, it'll probably hurt your enjoyment of the album. Enough of that, though. The point is that this band is awesome. Especially guitarist Tom Mollero, who comes up with brilliant riffs throughout and throws in all kinds of innovative, crazy solos that don't sound like they're coming from a guitar. The solo on "Killing in the Name" sounds like it could've came from a synthesizer, for instance. The stuff he pulls on "Take the Power Back" sounds like turntable work or something, his solo on "Bullet in the Head" seems a lot like a clavinet, and the squeals on ... Read More:

Mark Ronson is certainly the most prolific producer in Britain right now, with his hits that contain modern artists channeling a song from the days gone by. And his talent was most evident by making living trainwreck, Amy Whinehouse, a stunning soul singer with their hit "Valerie." All this makes this project all the more strange. It's certainly a departure for the band, yet it keeps all their classic elements.
Probably the song that's already got an instant place on the best-of is my current theme song, "Never Miss A Beat." It also serves as the highlight, containing "I Predict A Riot" youth revolution-type lyrics, with "Ruby" type beats, and the song fits perfect in the trio. "Good Days, Bad Days" has great beats, and a unique chorus, while "Always Happens ... Read More:

Now, I LOVE Randy Newman, but it has happened before, some of his older albums were simply generic blues... sounds all the same, and none of it very interesting.
But, going back twenty years or so, with the "Born Again" Album, "Trouble in Paradise", "Little Criminals", and especially "Land of Dreams" we were given really very good MUSIC. I play piano myself, and at least one or two songs per Album were fun to play. Not like all his earlier stuff, just stupid drug soaked sorry for yourself minority Blues. Besides, Newman is no Black. The man could be a Banker if he wanted. Playing that thick lipped Blues style, pretending to be so dizzy ... I should hope he is just trying to kid somebody.
And here, in "Harps & Angels" Newman has returned to ... Read More:

Gamma Ray is a song that I haven't been able to get out of my head. Yep, another Beck earworm. Anyway, this is a another solid Beck album. That means you have some of the best song hooks possible, a bunch of different musical influences, some songs which are great radio fodder, and some that are seemingly pointless. Beck, to me, hits about the same on each album. 1/3 great songs, 1/3 perfectly fine songs, 1/3 less brilliant songs. But he does that album after album, without fail. And even the least useful of the songs are novel and interesting at least once. He's a bleedin' genius.
