The 2-disc set includes many original compositions by Dr. Z. Randall Stroope, including "There Is No Rose" and "Psalm 23", as well as "Magnificats" from several composers from both the U.S. and abroad. The recording of Biebl's "Ave Maria", in conjunction with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Concert Choir, is simply second to none. If you think you know what a children's choir sounds like, then try this CD. You're in for a surprise ...

Karajan made a specialty of this great and difficult work, which he recorded no less than five times. I don't believe in duplicating reviews here at Amazon, but I am posting this one under each performance--they range from a live radio broadcast in 1959 from the Salzburg Festival to a digital recording from 1985 in Berlin. In general the sound improves as time goes on, and except for the last recording, the soloists are uniformaly world class.

Since Karajan's readings rank among the best ever made, I'd like to give a brief rundown of each:

I've heard other versions of the same music by different performers and conductors. This collection was done VERY well. It is very up beat and energizing. I play it for myself and my children every day, and would recommend others do the same.

Franz Joseph Haydn's efforts in the symphonic field have sometimes tended to obscure what he achieved in the field of sacred and choral music, which in itself was considerable. This can be accurately gauged on this 2-CD recording by Leonard Bernstein (no stanger to Haydn, he) and the New York Philharmonic of two of Haydn's greatest achievements in the sacred/choral arena.

The first of these is his monumental 105 minute-long oratorio "The Creation", a work that took two years out of his life (1796-1798) and which was his way (along with its companion "The Seasons", composed two years later) to continue the oratorio tradition of Handel.
