The music of the Mexican Baroque needs to be more well known than it is. Here is some in delightful performances. The music is gently embraced, performed with joyfullness and excellent taste, allowing to listener to enter fully into its enjoyment. The musical themes are unabashedly religious. The composers put their best efforts into these compositions, and the performers have reflected those efforts in their excellent re-creation. I have suffered Christmas Music fatigue in the middle of the Season. But I will certainly be reaching for this music when that time comes.

The Westminster Cathedral Choir does consistently fine work: one can always depend on their precision, musicality and good taste. Their sound is bright and forward, more like a French choral sound than the usually darker English sound. The lush, reverberant acoustics of the cathedral are a joy, particularly when the organ is used.

This is such a beautiful CD; it was just released this month. Here is Roman Catholic liturgy at its finest. You can't listen to this prayerful music, so beautifully sung, and not lament the Church's widespread misunderstanding of the Vatican II liturgy directives, which stated that Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony and the use of the organ should continue to have "pride of place" in the reformed Roman ... So unusual as Latin American music from the 17th and 18th centuries. The composers' names have never been heard by the average music lover, even in Spain. But the musical material is surprisingly worthy, it should not be forgotten that musicians from Spain were continuously bringing their knowledge, and new styles, to the colonies.
Jeffrey Skidmore has made a deep research on this repertoire, including in situ revision of sources and contacts with many local musicologists. The choir and baroque ensemble, Ex Cathedra, are the ideal performers.

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!
