I LOVE YOU PETER PHILLIPS!!!!!!Quote by Phillips:
"The Renaissance is well-known for its cultural giants. Leonardi di Vinci, Raphael, and above all Michelangelo epitomizes a period when the human spirit seemed to grow and gain confidence. This collection of complete works celebrates the musical geniuses who contributed to this astonishing period in European history."
Just commenting on two of the works included herein, I focus first on Thomas Tallis's 'Spem in alium' conceived for 40 independent voice parts in eight 5-part choirs. The effect of 40 parts coming together in properly argued polyphony is quite staggering!!!!And the Scholars assisted by equally skilled singers, give a performance of which Tallis, himself, would ... As the owner of several different recordings of Victoria's mysterious masterwork, the Officium Defunctorum, I've had a chance to listen to interpretations that vary from cold and academic, to organic but hokey, to rich and soulful. The latter best describes this effort by Philip Cave and the Magnificat singers. Although not without its faults, it is by far the most convincing performance to be committed to disc in recent years.
This particular version includes associated works by Victoria that would have been sung throughout the entire Office; this was done to mimic the actual event from top to bottom. The resulting program is thus drawn out nicely and gives some historical perspective, though the pacing might be a touch sluggardly for ... Read More:

This disc is remarkable by any standards. First of all, the music. Francois-Joseph Gossec is hardly a household name, even among lovers of the Classical Era in music, and yet his symphonies established the French symphonic tradition. Along with Mehul, he was the leading composer of Revolutionary France, and his incredible Requiem, written in 1760 and published 20 years later, was aptly chosen to commemorate French citizens killed in the storming of the Bastille in 1789.
Keith Anderson, Naxos' astute note writer, is unusually circumspect is saying that this great work "probably influenced" Mozart and Berlioz. I would say instead "almost certainly" did, and Cherubini in the bargain. Like the celebrated requiems of those composers, Gossec's ... Read More:

I want to thank the reviewers of this recording almost as much as the performers and even the composer. They introduced concepts such as "wall of sound" and "Spanish gloom", which I know shaped my listening experience from the beginning. I would have never downloaded this album, if it weren't for them. If you don't analyze this music, if you just allow yourself to feel, it will slowly dissolve everything else and will start celebrating your essence in all of its greatness. Deepest music I've ever heard. Buy yourself the very best equipment you can afford, or use your ipod, just wait patiently for the feeling. This is music for the dead with the potential to make you real happy and alive. As Kant would have said, it goes right to your senses, emotions, ... Read More:
