This CD sounds better with every listen, and the amount of listens per timespan is definitely on the increase! At first, it sounded like some decent psychedelic-ish rock or pop (it's hard to put it in any one specific category). After the initial listen, something strongly pulled me back to it--a powerful sense that there was much more there than a cursory listen could reveal. My intuition proved correct because this is turning out to be one of the more rewarding CDs I've ever heard. It kind of reminds me of those "find the hidden pictures within the big picture" puzzles from childhood. The more you look (or in this case, listen), the more that is revealed. I love Doug Sahm's music, and I've written glowing reviews on Amazon for every Doug Sahm disc I own. He is one of my favorite artists of all time, and certainly the one guy whose music I try to introduce friends to. This set isn't cheap, but you get all of the SDQ Mercury recordings, including the rarities collection "Rough Edges." The music here is a mix of Tex-Mex, garage rock, country, and proto country-rock - in other words great American roots music. Sahm and his co-horts were unlike any other band; the world is a sadder place because he's gone, but thankfully this great music is back in print for many to discover and enjoy.
There's too many highlights to mention, but here a few: "Mendocino," "Dynamite Woman," "It Didin't Even Bring ... Read More:

I don't get all of the negative reviews around this album. for me, there isn't a bad song on this the whole cd, and it's the only HWM cd that i can listen to right through.
maybe it's because im getting old but i've been a fan for YEARS, and this album makes all of their previous work seem dated. i think it's time that all of the die hard fans allowed for change and were open to the possibility that it isn't always a bad thing. it's called progression.
the production on the album is great. it isn't over produced it is just clean and loud. I don't even get the whole over produced thing anyways. the drums still sound like drums and they sound like someone is actually playing them. the guitar crunches, the bass is deep and the vocals ... Read More:
