It's a nice Cd, but beware--it's twentieth century style orchestral settings of Christian hymns--no one signs on it in Finnish. Nice background music, but it wouldn't have to be called "Finnish hymns," since most of them are actually German or English.

How anyone can say these chants sound the same must have ears of tin! They are all distinctly differently with haunting refrains that make you think you are in an Abbey listening to Monks at worship in a way that God must surely hear, from the rafters to the heavens, via voices that could make crystal tremble. So if you want a unique experience music wise then get this CD, it is as different as different can be and that's the truth.

At first, to be quite honest, this record did little for me: singing did not sound as enticing as in 11,000 Virgins, and there's very little music of Hildegard in it. Only 6 out of the 17 tracks have been set to music by her; opening and close hymns are not hers (neither text nor music), and Hildegard's visions (which make up most of the program) were set to music by A4, who borrowed recitation tones from different sources.
However, with A4, music is not the only factor to be taken into account. ORIGIN OF FIRE is primarily not a presentation of Hildegard's music, but of a specific aspect of her visions--this is why near half of the program is chanting: chanting is not all-the-way musical; it is first and foremost a form of recitation, ... This is an incredible recording of English and Latin chant. The Latin and English Offices of Compline are especially noteworthy. The Benedictine Nuns of Stanbrook have produced a remarkable, literate and prayerful English version of Compline. In my book, this is a desert island disc!

Listening to the clear, focused choral singing by the massive forces assembled for this underrated gem, taped as long ago as 1963, you really have to smirk at the claims made for a couple of more recent Mahler Eighths (e.g., Tennstedt's and Sinopoli's)--to wit, that the smallness of their undersized choruses "aids in diction." In fact, having a single choir instead of the double choir that Mahler calls for diminishes the work's overall impact. Not that Abravanel, in what was surely one of the highlights of his long conducting career, is out to steamroll us with enormous choral and orchestral sound. Clarity and naturalness are his watchwords, such that this mammoth symphony here achieves a kind of large-scale intimacy--a chamber symphony for huge forces, ... Read More:
