This is one of the greatest performances of Mozart Requiem in all recording history. As usual, this is a live recording of Celibidache. As you know, Celibidache was hated the "recorded music". He believed that, the music should be performed only in a concert hall and the audience, listeners should live that for one time, when the music playing in hall! But, if that performance was not recorded, we cannot listen that marvellous ocassion, anymore!
The tempos are incredible and very slow. Especially, in the first "Requiem aeternam" section, the tempo is Zen-like, and the Münich Philharmonic and Münich Chorus performed excellent. When you listen it, believe me, you can weep... And somewhere the tension ups, like in Dies irae movement. ... Read More:

Maybe a requiem mass is not your idea of entertainment, but after listening to this CD at least 100 times since purchasing it 2 months ago I can only rave about the quality of the singing and the quality of the recording.
I'm now afraid I have a bias for Hogwood produced work.
It is truly a beautiful piece of work: supported by Emma Kirkby and the boys choir whose voices lift you above the everyday sensations.
I highly recommend this CD over others on the same subject. I am unable to speak to the technicalities of techniques and choice of "manuscripts" I leave that to the experts (or so called experts). This is a moving piece and as such can only affect according to ones taste.

Perhaps the most wonderful chant CD ever! If you are a fan of Gregorian Chant and/or the monks of Santo Domingo de Silos, this CD is sure to please. Having listened to most of their albums, I have to say that this is probably the best.

Unlike most listeners I learned to love Mozart’s “Requiem”, not in the traditionally performed version as completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayr [that is the correct spelling; Naxos insist on adding an “e” before the final “r”, but that is just a mistake], but in the “purified” and consequently somewhat truncated version by Maunder, as performed by The Academy of Ancient Music, directed by Christopher Hogwood. Some years later, I came across the Druce version, which, as recorded by the London Classical Players under the baton of Roger Norrington, attempts to rewrite the Requiem as Mozart would have done. Both the Maunder and the Druce make the fundamental(ist) presupposition that Süssmayr was a bad musician and did not really interpret Mozart’s ... Read More:
