This is a superb CD, as one might expect from the Clerks' Group. I looked it up for a friend, to see if it is available. It is, but BE CAREFUL! The MP3 listed here is NOT this performance at all, and the samples are not music by the great 14th Century poet/composer Guillaume de Machaut.
PS - I returned to check the MP3; it's still wrong. However, there is a copy of the CD available, so I should say that this is the very best recording ever made of the motets and mass movements rom the Ivrea Codex, which is the main source of virtually the whole surviving repertoire of vocal polyphony of the 14th Century, aside from the manuscripts Guillaume Machaut prepared with his own hand of his own compositions. The codex is still kept in the ... Read More:

As I've found with most recordings in this series, the selection of works on this disc set is good - while there are certainly many more choices not included here, I can't really say any of those that were included are bad choices.
The quality of the performances varies. Those works which I am more familiar with seemed to be of lower quality to me. The quality of the recording, however, is of poor quality - either a high level of static or a low level of recording volume contribute to a consistant background hiss when listening to this album. Headphones are not recommended with this set.
If you're looking for an intro to choral works and might use this as a sampler or springboard, I'd recommend this set. However, there ... Read More:

Karajan made a specialty of this great and difficult work, which he recorded no less than five times. I don't believe in duplicating reviews here at Amazon, but I am posting this one under each performance--they range from a live radio broadcast in 1959 from the Salzburg Festival to a digital recording from 1985 in Berlin. In general the sound improves as time goes on, and except for the last recording, the soloists are uniformaly world class.
Since Karajan's readings rank among the best ever made, I'd like to give a brief rundown of each:
1959 Salzburg (EMI): In many ways this is the dream recording. The orchestra is the Vienna Phil, the chorus the Singverein of vienna, Karajan's favorite--they appear in all his recordings. ... Read More:

I've heard other versions of the same music by different performers and conductors. This collection was done VERY well. It is very up beat and energizing. I play it for myself and my children every day, and would recommend others do the same.

If you are looking for Mozart's Bassoon Concerto, don't buy this recording. (1) It is only the third movement, not all three movements. (2) It is listed and advertised as the "First Movement: Allegro." (3) It's not all of the third movement - the entire third solo episode is cut. (4) The soloist, George Zukerman can be heard playing ALL of the concerto elsewhere.

Franz Joseph Haydn's efforts in the symphonic field have sometimes tended to obscure what he achieved in the field of sacred and choral music, which in itself was considerable. This can be accurately gauged on this 2-CD recording by Leonard Bernstein (no stanger to Haydn, he) and the New York Philharmonic of two of Haydn's greatest achievements in the sacred/choral arena.
The first of these is his monumental 105 minute-long oratorio "The Creation", a work that took two years out of his life (1796-1798) and which was his way (along with its companion "The Seasons", composed two years later) to continue the oratorio tradition of Handel. Sung totally in German, the oratorio is about nothing less than the Biblical creation, and is one of Haydn's ... Read More:
