Maybe a requiem mass is not your idea of entertainment, but after listening to this CD at least 100 times since purchasing it 2 months ago I can only rave about the quality of the singing and the quality of the recording.
I'm now afraid I have a bias for Hogwood produced work.
It is truly a beautiful piece of work: supported by Emma Kirkby and the boys choir whose voices lift you above the everyday sensations.
I highly recommend this CD over others on the same subject. I am unable to speak to the technicalities of techniques and choice of "manuscripts" I leave that to the experts (or so called experts). This is a moving piece and as such can only affect according to ones taste.

Perhaps the most wonderful chant CD ever! If you are a fan of Gregorian Chant and/or the monks of Santo Domingo de Silos, this CD is sure to please. Having listened to most of their albums, I have to say that this is probably the best.

Most revivals on disk of music by forgotten composers are disappointing. They were forgotten for a reason. This is an exception. The Misa Scala Aretina by Valls is a work of exceptional quality, comparable to the best church music by Mozart and Bach. Good performance too.
The mass is written on the 6 note scale of Guido d'Arezzo, not a very promising theme, one would have thought, but it certainly works. It also used dissonances which were regarded as unacceptable according to the conventions of the time and led to a Europe-wide controversy.
Valls wrote many other masses, but only the Misa Scala Aretina remained in the repertory during the 18th Century. If his other works compare in quality to this one, it is to be hoped that ... Read More:

I grew up with the Britten version of this magnificent work - which has to be one of the greatest of the 20th Century.
I was not aware of Guilini's interest until I read the insert of the recording. With him in control of the main orchestra, soprano and chorus snd Britten, himself, in control of the chamber orchestra snd tenor/baritone soloists - it is a overwhelming combination!
Better than the Composer's original?? I actually think so - especially as it is a live recording, and all the tension that that generates. It is difficult to escape the excitement generated by the excellent soloists. May be the Soprano and Baritone are not quite as good - but the ensemble and the overall feel is inescapable. As for Peter Pears - ... Read More:

This recording, along with Neville Marriner's, is a great example of how a middle-of-the-road performance can remind us of the fact that Sussmayr's contribution can sound pretty good under the right direction. Too many words have been spent complaining about Sussmayr's work, and searching for other versions that leave you scratching your head more than anything. Call it nostalgia, or mere acceptance over time, but this traditional performing version still works, and this recording is right up there with Neville Marriner's.
