Naxos has begun a most welcome new series called "Nostalgia Naxos," the first two of which entries I have heard and love! Both have great similarities and both exhibit the triumph of style over vocal abilities.
<"Sing As We Go": Gracie Fields, Vol. 1> (8.120503) gives us 18 examples of the English musical hall/film star that was idolized by millions, mostly in her own country. Recorded between 1932 and 1940, these selections are perfect examples of not only English Musical Hall fare but the inimitable way in which Fields "put over" such crowd-pleasers as "She Fought Like a Tiger for 'Er Honour," " I Took My Harp to a Party," "Will You Love Me When I'm Mutton," and the one your heard in the film "The Dresser", "A Nice Cup of Tea." ... Given the title and the picture of Churchill on the cover, it's hardly surprising that half the songs reflect the mood of the Second World War, and present a sound picture of a nation united against a common enemy. As to the remainder, not all of them fit the national theme quite so well, and I wish that the net had been cast more widely, so as to bring in a greater range of personalities. Nevertheless, remastering has been well carried out, and this 2-CD set is a real bargain,

Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones may "suffer" from having written one of the all-time greatest theatrical smash hits in "The Fantasticks" in that the remainder of their work (and it spans four decades) is often pushed to the wayside.
Yes, the two wrote more than "Try To Remember", and this album, featuring the two songwriters with three delightful backup vocalists takes the listener on an educational and entertaining journey through their career, with detours down some paths not taken, in the form of songs cut from shows or which were substantially reworked.
Highlights include Jones's remeniscing about Gower Champion calling with the idea for "I Do! I Do!", a selection of songs from "Celebration" (since the cast recording ... Read More:

I lost interest in Black 47 a few albums ago. They were just getting too hit or miss for my tastes, especially when their first few albums held up so well. Just when I'd nearly stopped caring about them, along comes their best effort since "Fire of Freedom." It's about time!
Since nearly everything they've ever recorded was unavoidably connected to New York in one way or another, of course 9/11 was bound to hang heavy in the air. And it does, even on some of the songs that are about other matters entirely. So it's just as well that Larry and the boys didn't shy away from addressing it head on in "New York Town," "Orphan of the Storm" and "Mychal" (a tribute to Father Mychal Judge, set rather loosely to the tune of "Lord Franklin"). All three ... Read More:

I have always loved Brideshead Revisited, the book, the PBS series, and now the film!!! I thought all the young actors were superb and of course Emma Thompson as Lady Marchmain was incredible!! I love this music score!! I can listen to all the tracks without skipping any of them, and, of course, track 23, The Red Flame, is so moving it will send chills down your spine!!! I highly recommend the movie and the soundtrack to this production!!!

If you loved the TV series (I remember my college housemates and me sitting around in Lanz nightgowns mooning over Anthony Andrews), you will be transported back into it with this album...
