If you like sublime choral music around the holidays, and want to hear something different from all the regular traditional Christmas music, you must hear this beautiful oratorio. Friedrich Kiel, a lesser-known late romantic composer wrote this lovely work, and if you are lucky enough to find this rarity, snap it up quick; I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Performance could'nt be better. The motets also included are also beautifully sung. Highly recommended. Bo Biffa, Quincy MA

I thought that this recording would contain symphony only. However, it was too wordy. One has to listen very closely to the dialogue to see what it is about. Takes too much time! Judged my mistake when told that those who bought this CD also ordered etc. Which I ordered and it too was a talk/music type recording. Therefore, wrong genre.

The entire set is a great Bernstein expereince but the 3rd Symphony (Kaddish)dedicated to the recently assassinated JFK strikes not only an emotional cord but inspires contemplation. What would I say if I were to do my own Kaddish? Would I be upset with God? Would I dare ask God what happened to His faith in our covenant? I do not know. But this music certainly starts you thinking about it.

This is a beautiful memorial to a great musician, containing some of his greatest, most inspired performances. The "Symphonic Dances" never sounded better, and his "Chichester Psalms" is as energetic as ever. Gershwin's "Rhapsody" is taken at a fine speed (even though they cut one section of the orchestral playing) and Bernstein's playing represents him extremely honorably as a performer. But he is best known as a conductor and particularly as a champion of Mahler and Ives, which makes the final two tracks the most touching. The Adagietto from Mahler 5 was the piece he owned; he conducted it at RFK's televised funeral (Solti led the CSO in it at the concert immediately proceeding LB's death) and it's quite fitting that his first recording of ...
