If you like sublime choral music around the holidays, and want to hear something different from all the regular traditional Christmas music, you must hear this beautiful oratorio. Friedrich Kiel, a lesser-known late romantic composer wrote this lovely work, and if you are lucky enough to find this rarity, snap it up quick; I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Performance could'nt be better. The motets also included are also beautifully sung. Highly recommended. Bo Biffa, Quincy MA

If you like sublime choral music around the holidays, and want to hear something different from all the regular traditional Christmas music, you must hear this beautiful oratorio. Friedrich Kiel, a lesser-known late romantic composer wrote this lovely work, and if you are lucky enough to find this rarity, snap it up quick; I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Live in Antibes (1965)

I got a really old scratchy CD of this concert, but the sound blows me away. Coltrane's one and only live version of A Love Supreme (actually he performed parts of it live later, but these are lost to history) is truly a revelation. It is much less meditative than the studio version, with a hard edged sound that is typical of Coltrane's live performances.

Acknowledgement: Unfortunately this track, the most famous, is also the least inspired. Coltrane seems almost weary during his solos, and the repeated Love Supreme motif in several keys seems forced and sloppy this time. There is no chanting. The tune simply breaks off strangely.

Buy this now. Just do it. This is the best 'Trane disc I have purchased in years. Eric Dolphy plays a flute solo on 'Favorite Things' which alone is worth double the price of the absurdly affordable 2 cd set. This rules. Not to mention a incredible full cycle of 'Love Supreme' WITH ERIC DOLPHY. this rules.

Handel: Chandos Anthems No. 4, 5, and 6 (Chandos Anthems, Vol. 2)

The purchase of this CD was a pleasure due to my exhaustive search for Handel's Chandos Anthem No. 6. I searched exclusively for any recording of "With the Voice of Praise". My familiarity arose out of exposure to an SATB version of this anthem that the Asbury College Concert Choir sang when I was a music major.

After nearly four years of searching, I located this CD performed by "The Sixteen." Their rendition shocked me--in a good way. The historical notes indicated that Handel had to arrange many of these Chandos Anthems several times due to the constant change in personnel. Most of his singers were also servants and attendants, so he couldn't always count on his ensemble membership. Sound familiar to anyone?
