Poulenc: The Carmelites

from: Chandos

October 17, 2006
When the Met did its first production of Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites in 1977, there was only one recording of this opera available in the U.S., the one recorded during the composer's lifetime. Then came a video from Australia in the late '80s, a spiffy new CD set from the Lyon Opera in 1992, and with the composer's centennial in 1999 several other videos and soundtracks, including ones in German and the original Italian (for the La Scala premiere in 1957). It was Poulenc himself who wanted the opera to be sung in translation, and Chandos has honored his wish by committing to CD a fine production by the English National Opera. This succinctly-titled version uses a new libretto with numerous subtle revisions that make the text easier ... Read More:

I agree with almost all of the comments by other reviewers of this work. There is one problem: no libretto! My Italian is not good enough to follow the words, and I am left feeling frustrated -- and eager to go out and learn better Italian! You'd think the producers of this set of CDs (or Amazon.com) would note the lack of a libretto somewhere in their advertisement.

When this was originally released there weren't a lot of options when it came to Vivaldi's setting of the psalm "Nisi Dominus," you had Bowman or... Bowman. Chance and Pinnock were ahead of their time when they recorded this, the work becoming something of a standard for performing countertenors these days. Pinnock has always had a knack for doing tastefully understated Vivaldi, and in his last years with TEC we are treated to some poignantly insightful interpretations of the Venetian master's music. Although many of the more recent recordings give this one a run for its money (Stutzmann and King especially), Chance's warm tone and sensitive musicality combined with the energy and momentum of these performances cause them to remain at the top of the ... Agricola: A Secret Labyrinth (Chansons; Missa Guazzabuglio) /Huelgas Ensemble * P van Nevel

April 20, 1999
Agricola is quite a natural choice for the Huelgas Ensemble, being not only underrecorded like so many other composers whose works they have performed (Pipelare, Manchicourt, etc), but also full of intricate and bizarre contrapuntal techniques which are ideally suited to van Nevel's wilfully iconoclastic interpretations. There are several contentious performance decisions here, but it all sounds so amazing that I don't care. The contrast between the rich, strident sound of these Belgians and your average soprano-heavy English choir is amazing. The Huelgases sing this stuff with an amazing capacity to maintain a gorgeous choral blend AND to bring out the long, often quirky individual lines in the polyphony. There is a bewildering richness of material on ... Read More:

I became interested in Poulenc's DIALOGUES des CARMELITES long before I heard a note of the opera. I was twelve or thirteen at the time and was looking something up in an encyclopedia and I came across the entry for opera. Glossy photographs accompanied the entry and a stark black and white photograph of singers dressed as nuns lying prostrate on the floor piqued my curiosity. I'm sure it was a number of years later before I ever heard a note of the opera itself, but that image has remained with me for many years and it may be a reason why the opera has fascinated me over the years.

The story of the opera is about a Carmelite convent that was suppressed during the French Revolution and its nuns, who resisted the order of suppression were martyred. ... Read More:
