Got this for my husband's birthday a year ago. He fell in love with it and it has been such an inspiration with his current album. We live in an upstairs apartment, and an upright standard piano is not an option, so this has been a wonderful compromise.
We've had no problems with keys or electronics. The included sustain pedal works like a charm. The onboard sounds are an excellent bonus (some of the best you'll hear, even in electric pianos costing $1000 more), but we use Reason, ProTools M-Powered, and additional midi packages to give us nearly limitless quality sounds (e.g., the Abbey Road package). Regarding the weighted keys, I was nervous about this and had my husband actually try out the playability at a local music store ... Read More:

Tuning just shy of 1 full tone sharp with no adjustment possible. Voices crackly. Only 2-note polyphony. But considering the price, might be acceptable as a short-term starter instrument for a small child.
I am very pleased with this piano. I'm not a professional, I didn't have any specific requirements aside from what already comes with it, and I wasn't looking for the best piano on the market. When I was researching digital pianos, I noticed a lot of the not so positive remarks were from professionals or very skilled pianists who were looking for something very specific and that particular piano didn't meet their needs. I started playing classical piano when I was 5 and continued on through college. Music has always been a part of my life, but it's been more of an enjoyment and a form of therapy thing than something I was interested in pursuing professionally even though I could have made it that far. Whenever I was having a bad day, I knew I could shut ... Read More:

I'd say this is more of a decorative product than a fully functional one. It works great and what you see online is what you get, but I haven't been able to tune the thing. The product is from Ghana so it is authentic and you are supporting African craftsmen which is great- and it is made out of a real gourd and is attractive in appearance. It's especially good for kids as you can teach them cultural things. But most other Kalimbas have more thumb keys.
No stars for this keyboard (I gave it one because you have to fill out that line). Adult beginner? The keys are slightly less than full size and too small for you. Children? Doubtful. To make matters worse, the keys have a very spongey feel when pressed. It all adds up to discomfort when learning. As you go up the keyboard (to the right), the upper keys have greater volume than the lower keys, it therefore becomes difficult to hear the left hand. And it doesn't sound good anyway, not even close. If you want an excellent beginners keyboard at a comparable price, see my review on this one:
49-KEY Electronic Keyboard by Sinbon Electronics. (the one with the round speaker ports)
The Yamaha PSR-E403 keyboard has been replaced by the Yamaha PSR-E413 as of May 2008. The two models look almost the same and are EXTREMELY similar in terms of features, though E413 has a few upgrades (165 vs. 155 styles; 100 arpeggio functions vs 50; etc..). The two are so similar, in fact, that purchasing the PSR-E403 at a respectable discount below the PSR-E413 is something new musicians on a budget should consider. Check around for the best prices and then make up your own mind if the upgrades are worth the additional expense.
