Last year I bought a piano-keyboard melodica, which I liked, but, as someone much more comfortable playing Irish flute, tin whistle, recorder, and sax, I found it a bit of a challenge. What I really wanted was to be able to hold the keyboard like a whistle/recorder and use both hands to play the keys. But with the style melodica I had this was very difficult. Then I discovered these small-key Hohner models (alto and soprano)! I love them. They may indeed require some adjustment for traditional keyboard players, but for those who come from blown-instrument backgrounds they are extremely easy to adapt to and offer a great new world of sound. Great item but if your tot is hyper with toys and such, you might want to refrain from purchasing this until they can handle it. The springy coil makes the sounds (its really cool and I can't wait until she plays with it again) and my daughter likes to whip it around like crazy...it can really put an eye out or chip a tooth if it gets out of control, so be warned! And she wanted to constantly test the limits, although I tried to show her that only older people should use it. I had to pack this away high on a shelf until she learns to be more gentle with things like this.

Washburn Koa Ukulele

One night I'm watching Joe Versus the Volcano... and Joe is afloat on his steamer trunks playing the Cowboy Song on his ukulele... and it hits me: I want to learn to play the ukulele just so I can play that song! I've played guitar casually for many years, but I had no clue about the guitar's little cousin. I knew that I wanted something better than a toy ukulele, but also knew I had no plans to play this professionally. Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor Harmonica, A MINOR

As a total novice at playing the harmonica, I ordered this basically out of curiousity. It certainly increased my own enjoyment of the harmonica - per the claims in the description, it adds the option of minor chords so common in various types of ethnic music and A minor (being the "all white key" minor scale) is a great tuining to start with.

The only minor complaint is that the chord progression for the top holes is a bit hard to get used to - don't know whether this is just this particular instrument or true for A minor tunes in general.

Our local library has them for the toddler program and after several weeks of him going straight for this cage bell toy (and refusing to put it away when it was time to clean up), I decided he had to have one.
