The printer works very well. It has a short start-up time and prints the pages quickly. Very good quality. The scan-directly-to-print feature is really nice and works flawlessly.

I bought this printer in October 2008 and have been using it for a month now. I am very pleased with it and I am happier each day. It is easy to use and is as fast as advertised (maybe even faster). After installation I moved it to a corner near a power plug (because the wireless mode needs no other connection) and it faithfully and quickly prints slews of reports.

The setup directions are very clear but you have to follow the directions in the manual precisely. I did have to download new print drivers for Windows Vista and Mac OS 10.5 but other than that I didn't have any issues.

I have spent hours installing and uninstalling the software. I tried it on my home computer, also Windows XP, and it would not install there either. HP support gave me several suggestions--none of these time consuming suggestions helped. I was ready to return it and exchange it. I had bought a Canon MX850 for home, which installed easily! I tried downloading the HP driver for my husband's Mac (OS-X 10.5), also not a problem. Since my husband is buying me a Mac for my birthday, I'm saving the HP for my office, where I will use the Mac, and keeping the Canon for home. Unless you enjoy spending hours installing and uninstalling software, don't buy this printer to go with an XP operating system.

Overall, I rate this as a great value for the price. It does a good job of printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. The controls are straight forward and easy to figure out. I have it on a wireless network and had no problem setting it up and it works well. It scans and copies fairly fast and with good quality. The ink cartridges last as advertised and are not too inexpensive. It has a separate cartridge for each color which is something I recommend you always have to save on waste.
It does a good job on pictures, although I have a photo printer that I use for things that I want the quality to be very high.

I'm amazed at the photo quality and speed at geting the job done. I replaced a lexmark 5400 with it. That thing was a real dinosaur. Not to mention an ink hog. The ink cartridges are actually reasonably priced in comparison. I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

I can't think of how I could be more pleased with my HP Deskjet J4580. When I bought mine (10/7/08), Amazon was offering it at an awesome special price (with one of those "click to see price" links) with Super Saver Shipping... Even on the SSS the printer was delivered only 3 days after I ordered it (10/10/08)!

When I clicked to see the price markdown, I was so flabbergasted my first thought was that maybe the low price was because this printer is not "wired" for wireless, and and/or because it didn't come with the USB cable included (a packing lack which quite a few buyers noted not being pleased with). The ip90 promised to be an excellent printer, and for the time it worked, it was. However, within printing a few dozen pages under normal use (and I stress the word normal - it wasn't banged about or otherwise damaged) the printer became incapable of feeding pages in straight and would pull them in at an angle causing the printing to be skewed. No amount of adjusting the amount of paper or hand aligning would alleviate the problem.

Eventually I took it to the Canon repair centre and after they repaired it, within a few days, the text became misaligned, printing one pixel to the left about every five centimetres down the page.
