I had one of these at my old home in VA and was disappointed that I could not bring it with me to my new home. I live in Maine now where there are a ton of squirrels and was supprised to find that no store in the area carried these. My Aunt and Unlce who are avid birders and live in MA came to visit me when I was in VA and had never seen this device before. When they got home, they were able to find one locally and are very pleased with it. It is not harmful to the squirrels and the birds seem to ignore it all together. Save money on bird food for since those who you are putting the food out for actually get to eat it!

This product is the ONLY thing to use for thistle seeds. You will get some bright yellow goldfinches, who are the "only" bird that can hang upside down to eat the seeds. Any other feeder will attract sparrows. Sparrows land on the posts on this one and try really hard to reach under, but always fall off the perch. The gold finches just spin around upside down and go to town eating. It does make a bit of a mess under it, with thistle seed tailings, so be careful on placement (i.e. in a garden not on your patio, or have some kind of tray underneath).

I have had this feeder for 4 years and have never any problems with it. I have it hanging in one of the openings of my covered porch and the hummingbirds love it. It hangs in the shade and looks as good as the day I bought it. I like it so much I have given it as a gift to five of my friends and to my knowledge they are all still using theirs.

I agree with the other reviewer. The seed openings are too small to allow the seeds to flow out. I wondered why the seed level wasn't going down at all, since I have a lot of birds who quickly empty my other feeders. It's attractive and looks to be very durable, but it doesn't work. The birds cannot get to the seeds.
Very easy to clean, you can see hummingbird tongues through the clear plastic, they sit quietly perching and feeding (until a Rufous hummingbird comes along and chases them off anyway)- all reasons why this is my favorite feeder. Have seen 5-6 on the feeder many times, although I notice that the females seem to be more willing to share the feeder than the males. The ant well in the top that gets filled with water keeps them from getting in. Bees and wasps seem frustrated, but they sure try. Noticed that the feeder with the nectar guards isn't visited often as the ones that don't have it. I've tried switching locations, so that's the only explanation I can come up with. Maybe they'd rather not stick their beaks through the plastic tip if they ... Read More:

This product only had a life span of two years for us. When it worked it kept the bath mostly clear of ice and snow even in our MN winters. Our prior heater, from Allied, at least made it five years. We used both of them in a stand built for a farm supply three gallon feeding tub (racoons broke all of our regular bird baths) and both of them worked about equally well, that is when they worked.
Another disappointment. The feeder arrived with some of the downward beams not secured to cover the seams at the top, meaning that the glue had not done it's job. The bird seed container inside is very cheap plastic and it is really difficult to fill. I would not recommend this product.
