the enclosure is very nice. the rubber dampeners in which the hard drive sits on really help keep the noise and the vibration down. the biggest problem is the fan. the fan is obnoxiously loud. i had to unplug the fan because it was driving me crazy. i understand this isnt the highest qualitly case but they could have put a slightly quieter fan in there. wish i got the macally usb 2.0/esata enclosure instead
I bought this product to rescue my stuff from a crashed PC and transfer it to a MAC. It is and does exactly as advertised. Mine did work with the HD jumper in the "Master" position per the instructions. It was set to "Master" when I rescued it from the PC. Otherwise, I would have retained the original setting for the first try.
The instructions do say to spool the disk up to speed before making the USB connection and this is necessary.
My only problem was with the screws. The screws for the faceplate are a very slightly different size than those that secure the HD in the case. It took me awhile to figure that one out with my 65 year old eyes.
Reading these reviews before purchasing was a plus as well.
I'm posting this to help all the folks who have suffered data loss with the Drobo and posted one star reviews and all the happy customers who have posted four and five star reviews because they haven't had a failure yet. I don't own a Drobo, and am neutral about it. But all the controversy is due to a huge misunderstanding that people have about the Drobo. This misunderstanding is encouraged by Drobo marketing, so they are at least guilty of omission if not misrepresentation.
No matter how you look at it, Drobo is RAID. It's neatly packaged and easy to use, and may be better than other low cost RAID systems, but it's still a RAID-type system, and RAID IS NOT BACKUP.
The goal of a RAID system is increased performance and/or ... Read More:
I had a friend with a dead laptop with a lot of personal items -- tax files, resumes, irreplaceable photos, etc -- left on it. I ordered this hard drive enclosure, transferred her hard drive into the Sabent, and used it to pull off all her personal data and "sanitize" her hard drive of all personal info so she could send the laptop off for repair. Then I replaced the now-sanitized drive into her laptop.
And, since I already had a spare 2.5-inch notebook drive lying around, I now have a nice portable USB hard drive.
It's nice to know the alternative is there in the future, too.
I own three Drobos. In the last 2 months, two of them have failed; one terminally so, taking with it ~1TB of data. (The other required a series of reboots and rebuilds before the data was accessible again, the whole process took almost 3 weeks.) The worst part: Drobo Customer Support is unreachable, non-responsive, and generally unhelpful.
When it works, it's fine. When it breaks, there's nothing you can do. Unfortunately, it seems there is a lot that can cause it to break (even specific brands and models of HDDs seem to be incompatible -- although one can only find out after owning a Drobo and accessing the User Forums part of the website...)
Great concept, lousy execution, even worse support. Avoid.
I purchased the hdd enclosure for an old laptop hard drive and have been very pleased with it. I purchased it for $7 shipped, and for the price, it was a very good deal.
I have found this drive very portable, and slightly more durable than expected (it has survived being dropped from about 4 ft several times, but thats not recommended). I love the fact that it is powered only from the USB port and requires no additional power cords, unlike larger drives which require an external power source.
It is constructed of relatively cheap plastic and came with no instructions on how to use it. However, being an external hdd enclosure, it's pretty self explanatory on how to insert drive and plug into computer. It included no CD for driver support, ... Read More:
First, the good part. It installs easily, and works right away. So, if you want a cheap enclosure for a drive that you want to salvage form that old computer that you are about to throw away - it maybe exactly what you are looking for.
Now, for the disappointments. The biggest one is that it intermittently disconnects and reconnects - every 5-10 minutes. Often in the middle of I/O operations. Even during windows backup I hear click (off) and a few seconds later click again (on). Windows backup reports "backup couldn't complete. Write error". Usually, after 10-15GB of writing. Once it ran all the way to 80GB; but I was never able to finish the backup.
Among smaller annoyances:
The light only indicates that it is plugged in - not whether ... Read More:
This enclosure is very nice looking. It was a little tricky to get together, but my 500GB drive runs surprising cool. I am happy with the enclosure and might buy another.
