Unless you are already tied to the MicroMV format, you absolutely want to avoid it. MicroMV is highly compressed and very difficult to work with.

While the build and quality of the DCRIP5 is fine, you should very carefully consider whether you want to purchase a product and a format that have been discontinued for two years.

I have had this camera for over two years. While the images are accpetable, I am have a terrible time capturing software. If your main goal is video editing, then this camera will be a nightmare.

Pros: Small, relatively easy to operate.

CONS: expensive camera, expensive tapes, still images are not of good quality when considering a comparable still camera, proprietary format may go way of betamax. No microphone jack, makinig it hard to hear people in crowded area. While using pinnacle, when editing, I have to spend more time syncing the sound, rather than being creative with the editing process. (Granted, this may be a pinnacle software issue, but it highlights the lack of compability with the .mmv format).

I AM A SONY FAN. THIS CAMERA IS GREAT WHEN YOU ARE RECORDING AND WATCHING VIDEOS FROM THE CAMERA, BUT.. BUT... THE SUPPORT FOR THIS CAMERA AND THE SOFTWARE THAT CAME WITH THE CD SUCKS... I BOUGHT THIS ITEM AND I LOST THE CD THAT CAME WITH THE CAMERA AND YOU USUALLY FIND THE SOFTWARE IN SONY PAGE, THIS TIME I NEED THE SOFTWARE MOVIESHAKER VER 3.1 IN ORDER TO TRANSFER THE VIDEO TO THE COMPUTER TROUGHT FIREWIRE CABLE.. AGAIN THIS SOFTWARE CAME WITH THE CAMERA.. AND I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT.. I CHAT WITH SONNY TECH SUPPORT AND THEY TOLD THAT I NEED TO BUY THIS SOFTWARE AND DOES'NT WORK WITH WINDOWS XP... I WAS SHOCK BECAUSE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I BUY SOMETHING FROM SONY AND THE ORIGINAL SOFTWARE IN NOT IN THEIR WEB PAGE... SO I HAVE AN EXCELLENT ... Read More:

I've had mine 3 yrs. No problemo. The still imaging is useless but the camera itself for video is great. You can only transfer movies to the computer if you've saved it on a memory card. If you record on a tape, you are out of luck.

Lousy camera. Small and portable but lousy picture, hard to find micro tapes, and it broke in three different ways within a short period of time.

It's discontinued I've heard. Sony should refund full purchase price to all buyers of this piece of...malfunctioning mess.
