I am very pleased with the product. I use it for scanning both opaque graphics and 35mm and 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 transparencies. I never use the holders for the mounted transparencies allowing me to scan more at once. I then separate them with the cropping tool in Photoshop. HINT! If the first slide in the row is too close to the top of the light slot the scanner will treat the material as opaque.

My father in law, who has been scanning in thousands of slides, negatives and photos going back at least 60 years brought samples of every kind of photographic data to my house to test out this scanner.
In the past I have scanned in many, many 35mm with a Canonscan 9950F.
This scanner needed more stringent evaluation, it is obviously a powerhouse designed for serious users.
We set up on DELL XPS 600 with Windows XP. Hardware setup easy, even for beginners. Someone with experience would not even need directions.
Tried the scanner with 35mm slides, 35mm negatives, black and white color photos of different levels of quality. It worked well with all of them and was able to restore poor quality ... Read More:

I am a big fan of Epson's printers. But this scanner has been a nightmare. I bought it in June of 2008, and started scanning my vast archive of negatives. I soon noticed that there were color bands showing up on the right side of my images, detrimental to more subtle images with washes of cloudy sky, etc.
I called Epson, and they referred me to a service center. so I drove the 45 minutes and dropped it off. They spent a month replacing part after part, and then couldn't test the scanner to see if it worked or not, and wanted me to drive up there and give them some negatives to test. Don't you think a service center should be able to test a scanner? Wow.
So I call customer service and tell them that I am not willing to spend ... Read More:

I'm a fairly accomplished amateur photographer. I've got film from Africa, National Parks and other places, and have now put around 500 slides and negatives through this scanner.
It's *great*.
The dynamic range is fantastic. 'Dark' images come through wonderfully. If it was unintentionally underexposed, the 16-bit color depth gives lots of room for adjustment. I was able to rescue many previously useless images and get decent digital files.
Speaking of rescues, many old family photos have rolled through my scanner, and the pleasure of saving and restoring old memories has been of great worth.
The negative strip feeder struggles with strips less than two frames long; some of my old negatives were strangely cut, and I ended up enclosing them ... Read More:
This scanner is wonderful! I work for my local historical society and this is the scanner that we use to do all of our digital preservation. We use it to scan large format negatives and it works like a dream.

I was astonished at what this scanner could do, in terms of preserving the gentle tones of my black and white negatives. My only regret is that there is no equivalent to Digital ICE for black and white. That problem is not unique to this scanner, of course.
The quality of the images I get from this scanner, with negatives from a basic 1970-vintage twin lens camera, trounces the images I get with a Canon 5D SLR. I also have used it with 35MM negatives, which work beautifully, and with both 4.5cm x 4.5cm negatives and 110 negatives, which require that I jury-rig a special mask for the glass-covered medium format carriage (FH-869GR, not included).
The 9000ED comes with a 35MM carriage, 35MM slide carriage, and basic MF carriage. For the price, I ... Read More:
For some reason all the images look as though it was a printer with the ink cartridge running out. I have tried every possible combination and it all looks the same. Stay away from this thing unless you are seriously desperate.
Easy to install and setup. Had it working within ten minutes after it came out of the box. Instruction manual easy to understand and it came with a quick start guide. A strip of four negatives utilizing ICE software takes about five minutes to scan. Scanning strips is done in auto mode and is a great convenience. Noise level is minor. Very satisfied with scanned images and operation of this film scanner.

This scanner produces fair results for most work. There is a major flaw in the design that prospective buyers should know. The assumption is that when scanning negatives, there will be a difference in density between the edge of the frame and the inter-frame space. This is usually, but not always the case. I have a large project involving photographing small items against a black background. I carefully exposed so that the black background produces no density on the negative. This allows the maximum dynamic range for the object I'm photographing. This scanner refuses to scan the entire strip. I get nothing. If you need a scanner for negatives, this is probably not the one to get.
