For all you Mac and Quicktime lovers out there: BEWARE! This camera creates a different type of file that cannot be read by Quicktime. What's worse is the JVC offers no software for Macs or any sort of converter program. Wow, you pay $500 for a cam from a multi-billion dollar company like JVC and they don't bother to help you!!!
Fortunately there is a free program called "MPEG Steamclip" that can export the files to something Quicktime will understand, however very time consuming.
This camera is pretty solid for the price. I use it for video production and have done a music video and am currently making an internet tv show with it. Like most camcorders, the on board mic is pretty bad, so I got a Rode VideoMic, and now its great! The low-light performance is far, but more expensive cameras do a lot better. The manual controls are pretty good, but I would have liked to be able to control the aperture. My one big complaint is that it has no headphone jack. All in all, this camera is a great beginner camera to learn on.
I'm not going to rant on & on about all the features & how they compare to ALL the other models, you will go NUTS trying to keep each models pros & cons straight in your head & get dizzy after a while!! LOL I know I did!
After TOO much research, I broke down & finally bought this camera & let me tell you, we have been nothing but pleased in that decision! One of the key deciding factors, besides the most 'BANG" for the buck, was ALL the online user help groups with very active forums & myriads of artcles & info to ANY question that a new user could EVER need! We have had it for a year & we have yet to call Panasonic with ANY questions, as they are readily answered by a quick post or search on the ... Read More:
The Panasonic PV-GS80 is a good low end Camcorder, But it's big brother PV-GS85 is a much better buy. You can take pic's and save them on a SD card, It has more features than the 80. Don't buy the 80, buy the 85

This is my first camcorder & I really love this product. The quality of videos taken is amazing. Battery life is also good. The best feature which I liked is support for memory stick. With DVD you cann't shoot more than 20 minutes with high quality but with memory stick there is no such limitation. I strongly recommend this product to others.
I've had this camera for a few months now after upgrading from a tape based Sony pistol-grip style camcorder. Aside from the wacky avchd codec that is not particularly standard, this is a nearly perfect fusion of form and function. I did debate between this and the TG1, but in the end I decided I couldn't live without Nightshot. I don't use it much, but I'm used to having it and I know I would miss it. Get a mini-hdmi -> hdmi cable and the camera works as a terrific player on any hdtv (w/ an hdmi in, of course). Buy with confidence. This is a terrific camera.

So far so good... The device is great if you need to capture something happening on the spot, but for any kind of production it is simply useless, well maybe it's good enough for web production.
Discovered Specifications:
1280x720 Mode: ~3000kbps MPEG-4 AVI
720x480 Mode: ~1700kbps MPEG-4 AVI
Either this is a low quality fast-mode MPEG-4 codec designed for embedded devices, or there is too much noise and/or distortion in the picture for the codec to produce a descent looking output. If I were them, I would crank this device up to 5000kbps on 1280x720 Mode and 3000kbps on 720x480 mode and offer a firmware update. I have found that only by capturing in 1280x720 Mode and converting down to 720x480 Mode in software was I able to achieve ... Read More:
I paid $169 for this digital camcorder and it has features I will probably never use. I read all the pros and cons and realized the cons are all operator head space and timing. Read the directions and this is one great camera.
I haven't had alot of use yet. So far so good. I have used it for a soccer game and the clarity at a distance wasn't the best. Close pictures and video seem good. Shipping was awsome, the product has been everything they said it was. The tripod is only about 8 to 10 inches tall, but it get's the job done for still pics and fixed video.
Overall I am very pleased. Biggest bang for the buck.
