FileMaker Pro 8 Upgrade from FileMaker Pro 6-7 Win/Mac

I have been experimenting with relational databases for some time now and I have used both Microsoft Access and Filemaker. Without question, Filemaker has consistently been the easiest, most intuitive of the two products. I am not a programmer but simply an end user who likes to delve into spread sheets and databases as the need arises. Microsoft Access may have more advanced features, things I would probably never use, and conversely it is much more difficult to navigate and it is not as user friendly from someone who isn't a programmer.

I totally agree with another reviewer that the biggest drawback of numerical recipes (NR) is that first you have to buy them to see whether you need it or not afterall. Linux these days is way more user-friendly than it used to be. If you have fedora or ubuntu, get gsl with one line
On fedora:
yum install gsl gsl-devel
On ubuntu:
sudo apt-get install gsl-bin gsl-ref-html
That's it, people! What can be harder!

GSL documentation is free online, but you can order a book as well.
GNU Scientific Library Reference Manual - 2nd Edition

P.S. also GSL library can be used together with c++ code.

I have wanted to make my own game since I was 8 and first played the Colecovision my parents bought me. In the past I have tried to teach myself programming from various books, but really never could grasp how to apply the knowledge.

I am currently working through XNA Volume 2 by 3DBuzz and I am happy to report that I have a working knowledge of the concepts and methodology and am well on my way to designing my very own game for the first time.

I truly never thought I could learn to program, but the video format and the extremely thorough way that the material is presented makes it easy for any beginner. You truly need no prior knowledge. I got this to work once, for about an hour. Then it stopped. I am a pro when it comes to computer repair. It worked once when I first installed it, but after that I ran into nothing but problems. After two weeks of fiddling (installing/reinstalling OS, installing, updating, searching) I finally came to the conclusion of: When it works, it works great. When it doesnt, it will never work again. I ended up returning this product and am in search of another. Definately not for the typical home user.

Oh, and there is virtually no tech support for this product.

The Power C product is one of the wonders of the world. The product consists of a well written book and a diskette containing a working C Compiler that works in a Dos environment. For someone trying to learn the C programming language, it is an inexpensive software package and tutorial book. Unlike many compiler books, this one is stuffed full of working example code demonstrating the use of the library routines. Back when I used to sell a Dos compatible operating system, I used to bundle each copy of my software with this book and Disk. The book and disk sells new from Mix Software for about $19 plus tax and shipping so the prices here for used copies are even better. This product is a great deal for a student or hobbyist.
