Reason 4.0 has turned out to be an upgrade that you will not want to miss, and if you're a newcomer, you'll be very pleased as well.

I started with Reason 3.0, and found it to be one of the most powerful softwares I've ever used. This is largely because Reason comes at the problem of music production from a new angle, that of setting up instruments to function as a hardware rack, with all the routing possibilities that it entails. We're talking about flipping the instruments and getting access to full back panels, with control voltage, gate, and note jacks that are wired up with virtual cables.

Sibelius 5 Educational Edition

Installation on both a pc and a mac was easy. Getting the USB MIDI driver installed on the pc was annoying and time-consuming - but that's not a Sibelius issue.
My biggest complaint now is that I am unable to use the supposedly superior "flexi-time" note input mechanism. I am a pianist and professional piano teacher, my fiancé is a computer professional, and between the two of us and way too many hours of trying to make this work, we still haven't figured out what is wrong. Apparently I am not the only one with this issue. Online I found this cry for help: "When I use flexi-time, there's a delay between when I play the note and when I hear it over headphones. Buyer Beware! I took delivery of this product from Amazon on 28 August 2008. I normally (correctly)assume that my Amazon purchases are getting me the latest available edition of books, etc., and that is usually the case. In this case, however, I learned after installing the product that there is a version 9.0 of this product. I registered my version 8 product but received no offer for free upgrade to version 9.0.
I believe that this is a good product, but I would recommend investing your money towards the newer version. I believe that there should be a free upgrade if the new version is out and you have unknowingly just purchased the prior version (both are the same price as far as I can tell). Just my thoughts.

Sibelius Student Edition V5

I haven't had a whole lot of time to play with Sibelius yet, but as soon as I do, I think I will enjoy it! I was very impressed with the fast deliverance also.

Final Cut Express 4 Upgrade from Final Cut Express 1, 2, 3, or 3.5

I also own Final Cut Pro 5.1, but since I had Final Cut Express 3.0, I thought I'd spring for an upgrade.

I'm most pleased with this--so far it's very stable, I love its new filters, and the features it has are almost equal to Final Cut Pro in all the important features that prosumers are most likely to use. For most prosumers, it has everything we need. I am continually amazed with how much you get with Final Cut Express.

Because I had Final Cut Express 3.0, I was able to load up the media from that version of LiveType and make it work with the version of LiveType that shipped with FCE 4. I never used Soundtrack that much, so I can't say I miss it, but if I needed it, I could always use the version that came with version 3.

Adobe Premiere Elements 4 [OLD VERSION]

Great features but it's extremely slow to load and is terribly buggy. On an HD project with four layers and keyframes, it's utterly unusable due to crashing. I've gotten weird behavior, errors during renders and, worst of all, shutdowns. It is unusable since it now takes approximately 2 minutes to load and I get a major crash within a few minutes of trying to do anything useful.

I've got three fast hard drives and 3 Gb of RAM on Win XP so you'd think that would be enough.

It would be an incredible program if it could keep running.

Final Draft Version 7 Academic Win/Mac

I'm a writer, here's my story. I bought Final Draft mainly because I felt I needed to upgrade from Microsoft Works or get left behind. Well, I've worked with Final Draft for a while, and to be honest I do not think it was worth the $150.00 dollars + postage. It's very hard to format scripts, especially ones that had been saved in other formats - it adds all these extra spaces and it's terribly time consuming to remove them. Also, it sometimes adds in a character heading when one isn't needed and it's very difficult to get rid of those showing up all the time.
I cannot figure out how to use the Tagger part at all. The most disappointing part for me was that it DOES NOT read the scripts back - it does however save your script in a new format that you cannot add to. ... Read More:
