Last year I planted a tree and didn't know if I was giving it too much or too little water. This year I have this handy device to help me. The directions say it's for house plants, but it's working great for my newly planted trees. I can finally tell when they need water and can avoid over watering.

It seems to work Great care must be taken in opening the capsules as they contain a very loose powder and the aim is to put them in a very small hole. I recommend doing it over a plate so spillage can be recovered.

This unit is very useful for measuring soil moisture and sunlight. While I wasn't in a position to evaluate the fertility feature, I do know that the ph testing is useless.

When I tested the commercial soil in my potted plants, I noticed that they all indicated a ph of 7. To my surprise, my yard and garden soil also indicated 7. Since I have heavy clay soil in my yard I began to suspect that the Rapitest was inaccurate.

I took a couple 1/2 cup soil samples out of the garden and put them in small seed pots, carefully followed the Rapitest instructions for ph testing and still came up with a ph of 7. I added two tablespoons of vinegar to one of the samples and two tablespoons of baking soda to the other. Results? ... Read More:

I picked mine up from Home Depot and like the other reviewer said....it only gives a neutral pH of 7.

For fun, I put a good amound of Baking Soda (akaline) into a glass of tap water...still reads 7.

I saw many negative reviews so I must report I have had a different experience. I tend to use potting mix or loamy soils so I don't know if that is a factor. However in meter seems to report put water as maximum as I expect. With soils I known to be completely dry is reports as dry. In one section where I have peas it quickly reports as being on the dry side as I would expect as they are heavy water users when making pods.
I would certainly test against known conditions to make sure the unit is working but it certainly has made is much easier for me to quickly gage water.

Agree with Mr. Moore, thing is stuck on ph 7. Have tried Diet Pepsi (ph 3.2) and milk (ph 6.3) and it doesnt budge. Milk does show a "C" on the moisture meter.

...but Consumer Reports found the results inconsistent, so I plan to repeat the test and average the results. (There are enough supplies included to test soil 10 times.)
