My son was three when we purchased this and as long as I got him started and came by to look at each completed picture, he would keep himself busy getting all the pieces in "just the right spot" while I cooked, cleaned...etc. The boards are two-sided. We keep the pieces in a ziploc bag.

Tinkertoy Classic Jumbo Set

After many bad experiences with revived classic toys (for example, the robot game), I was very pleased to find this set to be the high quality I remembered.

This is a toy the whole family can enjoy together on a rainy afternoon. My 2 year old and my 7 year old both enjoy this set (beware of small pieces for younger children) and how they can build huge things in seconds.

This encourage imaginative thinking, problem solving, and builds fine motor skills. Just make sure you get more than 1 set to release the creative possibilities.

My 2 year old received this over a year ago. In the beginning, it got lost under the electronic, attention-grabbing toys. However, it later emerged and he became facinated with matching the shapes to the holes. He has now learned that there are many alternate options (e.g. two trianges can make a square, two squares can make a rectangle, etc.). He and his little sister also like to stack the pieces to make sandwiches! Although this is not their most sophisticated or exciting toy, it is one of few that consistently holds their interest.

I received the 50 blocks today in a clear plastic package with a cloth bag included. The blocks are small-ish, at 1 1/4 inches, but they are not tiny. Because the colors and letters are bold, they are easy to read. I wanted some blocks to put around the house, especially with Christmas decorations, to spell some words. These will be great.

They will especially be great because I have some blocks that are I don't know how old, exactly the same size and design, that are holding up perfectly. I have had the word "Joy" in three of these blocks sitting on a shelf in my study underneath a Precious Moments baby Jesus in a manger--for years! Recently I rinsed all the pieces in plain water, and they came out great.

This is an excellent tool for building an understanding of color, shapes, and patterns. There is so much room for learning by using this toy! And best of all, it's fun! And, for us moms out there, keeping up with it is a breeze. It comes with it's own vinyl storage case, and who can beat magnetic pieces that stick to the board to ease your child's frustrations if the pieces don't "stay" where they are put. The pictures included are really cute - I especially enjoy the duck pattern - and my daughter loves putting them together. All-in-all a really wonderful (and cheap!) investment for hours and hours of fun, stimulating activity! Kudos yet again, Melissa & Doug, for a really great product.

Blocks are blocks and children love them.

However, when ordering this item I ended up having to place 2 orders because I inadvertenly sent the original item to the wrong address and never got a response to my email inquiry to cancel the 1st order.

I don't think I will ever order from this vendor again.

I bought this toy for my niece when she was about 16 months old. She loved it. The pictures, the sounds. Three months later, she's grown with the blocks. Before, she lacked the dexterity to orient them in three dimensions so make the animals match up. Now, she can handle three dimensional movement, no problem, and her challenge is to get the front and back to match up in the right directions. She knows what animals they are , knows how to make the sound of all of them (woof woof!), and when a pig or a cow shows up in another book, that she can go over, get the blocks and arrange them to make the sound. She. Loves. Them. Melissa and doug - two thumbs way up.
