I am buying an NXT for my 11 year old son who has been begging for one for awhile. He is a member of the Robotics team at his elementary school (his 3rd year) and so he interacts with these every day, but wants one of his own to play around with at home.

For those of you whose children are or may be interested in science/engineering/robotics, etc. or are just looking for something creative to do, there is a worldwide program out there that they can join to help develop these skills and have fun at the same time! My boys, 2 & 4, love this dinosauer. Very durable. The actually have two different dinosaurs and they like to have races :)

Erector Spykee - The Spy Robot

Picked one up from a local Toys R Us. Setup was easy if you read the instructions. Overall it works as advertised (except that it can't climb stairs). I've controlled it remotely, and even freaked out my wife who was unaware that I was controlling it from a coffee shop about 1.5 miles from my house.

For the price I think it's well worth it (I'm sure it'll go down too as time goes on and newer models appear). The software is simple, and it goes together very well. However, a few of the assembly diagrams were difficult to make out, so I tried my best to take my time (40 yrs old and still a geek). I travel out of town quite a bit, and frankly this will allow me to check out my house and family while I'm away.

LEGO® Mars Mission MT-51 Claw-Tank Ambush

This is a review for my 6-year-old son. This particular Mars Mission set was easy for him to assemble with little help from me. Once assembled, the body did have a tendency to come disconnected quite easily, but he seemed to like that (though he didn't like struggling to reconnect it).

I have to admit some sympathy to the parents who are concerned about the "theme" of Mars Mission, but on the other hand I will suggest that (1) being human-centric is a good thing if we care about human survival; (2) mixed loyalty to the humans this makes the aliens fun to play as well (not pure evil).

LEGO® Creator Monster Dino

I bought this for my son's 10th birthday. It's great. I wanted to put it together, I told him it might be complicated, but that's just because it looked like fun. He let me start it with him, and then he fooled me and got up at 4am to finish. It's absolutely great. But one thing, when you put in the batteries, they go in on both sides. We didn't pay attention to that part and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work, and we had to take it apart and that's when we realized our mistake. It's a great toy and my son loves it. It's the only thing he's not changed, out of all his lego sets. It's a lot of fun.

Erector Radio Control Tuning Street Racer Set, 368 Pieces

It's a good toy but its definitely tough to build for kids. There are some difficult steps requiring bending of the metal pieces while trying to put in screws through hard-to-put places. I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm in my mid-twenties and that the instructions still required my full strength and dexterity to get some of the nuts and bolts into place.

Bought this for my nephew last Christmas. Not only did he build it by himself, he took it apart and then made some design tweeks.

Definitely recommend.
