Honestly what with 3-D models, computer models, Google Earth and such, what's the point of keeping a creaky old globe around?

Aw I'm just joshin' you. Globes are useful because by putting one in your den or rumpus room they let people know that you appreciate stylish, tasteful, obsolete technology like dial-up modems, 8-tracks, Day-Glo fondue sets and sextants. Or that you're a sucker for garage sales.

They are also handy if you need to know the chief imports and exports of Uruguay. Wait, well no they're not, you'd need a book or the internet for that. But if you're in your den or rumpus room and need the longitude or latitude of Uruguay, you're all set.

Livingston Globe

I purchased this for my eight year old grandaughter who lives in the USA. She loves it and has great pleasure telling everyone that it is a TOPOgraphical Globe! She visits maybe once a year and we visit there from UK maybe twice a year so she wanted to know more about where everything was. She is still calling the SW of England - Cornwall - where we still live although we originated from London, a "town". She has a problem with understanding "counties" but she will get there. My sons are in the RAF so she now knows where they are currently stationed -Bahrain and Cyprus - but the US Post Office keep asking my daughter what country they are in ? They ARE countries. Buy a globe like this and you can see that.

Leap Frog Explorer Smart Globe

My children have owned this for several years and enjoy it as much today as they did when they got it. In typical Leapfrog fashion, they can learn and have fun at the same time. (So can Mom and Dad!!) Their favorite is the timed game where they have to find different locations (you can choose states, countries, continents, etc.) As a result of this "toy", my children are much better at geography than I am!

We like this toy a lot. It promotes learning of cultural details, such as typical foods, dress, and animals of many countries, including the United States. Many of us grow up not knowing how to identify characteristics of even our own culture, whichever culture it may be, because it seems to be "just how it is". I think looking objectively at our own culture helps reduce ethnocentrism and hegemony. This toy also helps kids learn many country names and practice memorization skills. My kids enjoy being able to switch the disks and watch them spin around through the window in the cover. It's brilliantly designed with a compartment on the back to store the disks, however, my 4 y.o. has trouble getting them in there. Also, the disk cover comes ... Read More:
