If your familiar with Thomas train track, have a large area to work with and know you want this expansion set, I would upgrade to five stars. What I have found though is that if you want a lot of flexibility in layouts on the Thomas train table, the 3 1/2" curves & switches offer more options for different layouts. The 6 1/2" curves can be hard to fit & work with on a train table. In defense of the bigger curves though, I've found the battery powered trains have an easier time with the larger radius curves especialy when pulling coaches and they sometimes get hung up on the switches. (This really is my kids toy)

I don't know the toy yet -- Grandson is getting it for his birthday. But these cars are $9.97/set in Walmart, and $1 more on most web sites. I don't understand Amazon's pricing on the car sets at all.

Santa Fe Train Set

This train does not stay on its tracks well. The manufacturer needs to modify the track so that it holds the train in place better, especially around corners. Also, if the child shifts his/her butt from the center of the tiny seat, he/she will tip over along with the train off the tracks. The track is very small, so I suggest buying additional tracks to make the ride less circular.

We started with a basic generic wooden train set and have been adding accessories over time. This is one of the better ones we have bought. I was going to just get the stacking risers but this a a better value for your money. When building your layout though, I would start with this piece and build off from it to better incorporate it.

This is a great addition to my son's train table. He loves it! It teaches him a bit about recycling as well. The only complaint I have is we're always looking for the tires that go in the car, but I think it is cool that they come out. The bins in the back car swing back and forth, which is a nice touch. We plan to purchase the recycling center to go along with these cars. These are some of my son's favorite cars (aside from all the engines!)

I thought for sure that some movable part on this engine would break, or that the engine would be perpetually tipping over. Neither has happened in the year+ we've owned Harvey. The magnet is strong enough to pick up another engine, or paper clips, coins, etc. The more moving parts, the more interesting the engine, and Harvey's got the goods!
