Childrens Toyshop VHS : Skin Game
.

Skin Game

starring: James Garner, Louis Gossett Jr., Susan Clark, Brenda Sykes, Edward Asner
directed by: Gordon Douglas, Paul Bogart

February 07, 1995
In the mid-70's James Garner & Louis Gossett teamed up in two memorable episodes of "The Rockford Files". Before that, however, they starred in "The Skin Game" with Susan Clark (best known as the mother on the t.v. show "Webster"). The Skin game is a smart comedy which also functions as an effective critique of the institution of slavery. All three stars are appealing and Garner does what he did best in "Maverick" and Rockford -- the con game. The con here is simple but enjoyable. The movie includes good performances by several familiar character actors of the era and features Ed Asner as the slave-trading bad guy. Due to "political correctness" I don't know if this movie could get made today, which is a shame. Highly recommended!

Seven Days in May (B&W)

starring: Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Fredric March, Ava Gardner, Edmond O'Brien
directed by: John Frankenheimer

June 17, 1997
Some of the best actors in Hollywood are in this film, but the best performance, as far as I am concerned is by Burt Lancaster. When I read this book and saw the movie as a teenager, it scared me to death to think how easy it would have been to topple our government. I would highly recommend this movie for any age range, with the caveat that reading the book first would enhance the experience.

Secret War of Harry Frigg

starring: Paul Newman, Sylva Koscina, Andrew Duggan, Tom Bosley, John Williams
directed by: Jack Smight

March 01, 1992
It sure would be nice if this movie were to become available on DVD or
Blu-Ray it it's original theatrical widescreen release. Remastered
sound and picture, if necessary, would be great, too. This is one of
Paul Newman's best films. Looking forward to the day.

Return to Salem's Lot

starring: Michael Moriarty, Samuel Fuller, Ricky Addison Reed, Andrew Duggan, Evelyn Keyes
directed by: Larry Cohen

December 13, 1993
If your a fan of 80's B-Movies like myself, this one is a must-have in your collection. While this doesn't compare to the original Salem's Lot, there is still entertaining humor to be had in this one. Most will rate this film terrible, but as the title of my review goes, it's only for the campy B-Movie collector only. too bad it's not officially on DVD....

The Incredible Journey of Dr. Meg Laurel

starring: Lindsay Wagner, Jane Wyman, Andrew Duggan, Gary Lockwood, Brock Peters
directed by: Guy Green

April 18, 2000
As a hillbilly, I'm not offended by that term. I am offended by this movie, though. This collective group of hill people make the Beverly Hillbillies look like Albert Einsteins.

The production values and writing are poor. The plot is predictable and cheesey. Don't waste your time. Just turn on the Hallmark channel and watch a couple of episodes of Little House instead. They won't be quite as ridiculous, but they'll hit ya in the same place.

Merrill's Marauders

starring: Jeff Chandler, Ty Hardin, Peter Brown, Andrew Duggan, Will Hutchins
directed by: Samuel Fuller

May 24, 1995
Great Movie. Lots of young stars, but now they are old or gone. Great movie history. Lots of these guys got their start in this flim. One bad part is that this was Jeff Chandlers last movie. He hurt his back while fliming this movie. And died from comp. from the surgery on his back.Very sad he was a great star.

It's Alive

starring: John P. Ryan, Sharon Farrell, James Dixon, William Wellman Jr., Shamus Locke
directed by: Larry Cohen

January 18, 1994
In "celebration" of the Halloween spirit, my wife and I watched a couple of old horror flicks in recent days. As a lark, one of our selections was Larry Cohen's IT'S ALIVE. I had not seen the film in about 20 years, and I knew perfectly well it was not exactly a class act. But I was looking for modest, guilty-pleasure diversion.

It was a diversion, but not altogether a pleasure. Made in 1973/74, it absolutely REEKS of the sensibilities of that fashion-challenged time. Everyone smokes...everywhere. Bosses still played "grab a**" with their secretaries. Fabrics, carpets, cars and curtains were all shades of brown ("earth tones"). Everyone drank hard liquor. If the TV series MAD MEN slavishly recreates the feel of the early `60s...IT'S ... Read More:
