I read about this film in Vanessa Redgrave's fascinating biography (which I highly recommend). Her performance in this role is stunning, and as always with truly great art, the script, the directing, and the acting never get sentimental. This is a realistic look at the confusion, disorientation, and tough choices that take place when human beings find themselves in horrific situations outside of their control, yet despite these conditions, the film leaves us a glimmer of hope by showing that even in the worst times human beings can still retain their humanity.
It is a shame that this film is not on DVD. It should be watched, re-watched, and studied. The acting is brilliant, the script realistic and masterful, and the acting sublime. ... Read More:

I'm sure that this was a good film at the time of its release. I found it a bit long and I was unimpressed by Rex Harrison--talk about over acting and big close up soliloquies that are syrupy sweet. There was nothing romantic about him. The side story with Mr. Fairley was about as transparent as it could get. The music was good. The last act breezes by at warp speed and it's just a little disconcerting to watch this woman just content to give up on looking for real love and settle for the day that she can truly be with the Captain again. A real Wuthering Heights sort of ending. Decent film but nothing to write home about.

Yes, it's goofy. I love Richard Lynch. He can play really ugly characters and not need special makeup (kinda like Ron Pearlman). Lee Horsley ... did this son of a gun fall off the earth? In a minor part as one of Cromwell's villanous hordes is Robert Tessier. Best remembered for his cage fight in HARD TIMES (where old Charlie Bronson beat on his pointy-bald head like a drum). If you don't ask for much thsn this film delivers.

This little British-made gem of a film was one of the last movies to be released exclusively on VHS format. Too bad it wasn't one of the first to be released on DVD. It is similar in storyline to Victor/Victoria, but it is different enough that you can watch both and enjoy the comparisons without feeling that you have just watched the same film twice.
Elizabeth (Jessie Matthews) is a British shop girl working in a fashion boutique that caters to the wealthy. She dreams of being a famous entertainer. One rainy day - while wearing the fancy clothes she is supposed to be delivering - she runs into Victor, aspiring Shakespearean actor and actual female impersonator who works the bawdy music halls of London. He is down to his last shilling when he gets ... Read More:

This was a stunning movie in its day! Of course, it's a bit dated now, but I think it has well stood the test of time. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were off-screen rivals who were not too fond of each other anyway. But, they had never worked together before! And here for the first time, these two 'silver screen giants' meet, work well together and both deliver stirring, powerful performances of two sisters whose rivalry matched the actresses' real-life squabble. Closely following Hitchcock's movie 'Psycho', this movie follows along the lines of a similar psychlogical thriller. Character anaysis of such deeply disturbed people were just not done in those days. There were good guy and there were bad guys, and that's all there was to it. Where Psycho tried to explain ... An interesting DVD. The movie was good but the extras were even better. The interview with Vonnegut and Nolte was quite interesting, as was an idea for trailer that was eventually modified before being used. It occurred to me that the original trailer (still admired by the producers) violated the warning of the movie by being something that should not even be pretended at.
