M Butterfly

starring: Jeremy Irons, John Lone, Barbara Sukowa, Ian Richardson, Annabel Leventon
directed by: David Cronenberg

November 10, 1997
If you're looking for a Book turned into a movie--this is it but in a very obscure fashion. This movie takes the stereotypes that Long writes about in his short novel and basically flips them around here. Here you have the American man, but it is he that is hopelessly inlove with the Asian "woman" (using that term lightly). She is the one that is full of decite and ends up betraying him. At the end, he has to realize that he, not only was abdoned and betrayed, but it was by a man. This movie had great twists and turns and also and was definetly an attention keeper.

Wimbledon

starring: Kirsten Dunst, Paul Bettany, Jon Favreau, Kyle Hyde, Robert Lindsay
directed by: Richard Loncraine

December 28, 2004

This film is far too underrated for all that it is.

Wimbledon is the tale of dear Peter Colt(Paul Bettany) who's beginning to learn that his tennis career is coming to and end and how in-fact he must deal with it. Everything seems to be going downhill until he meets upcoming super-star Lizzie Bradbury(Kirsten Dunst) and she help teach him how to love both the game and life again.

Now true this plot is not the most original, take Bridget Jones or You've got Mail and make them tennis players and TA-DA! But with that said, the performance of Paul Bettany makes it so much more.

Bettany is simply brilliant, over-thinking and awkward coming from a typically cold and slightly 'off' Brittish family to the fast-paced world ... Read More:

Defense of the Realm

starring: Gabriel Byrne, Greta Scacchi, Denholm Elliott, Ian Bannen, Fulton Mackay
directed by: David Drury

All about whistle blowing and why everyone should for a better world.
I like Gabriel Byrne and Greta Scacchi so I'm a little prejudiced. I guess this movie shows me up as a frustrated journalist.
I guess I would have done exactly what Gabriel Byrne did and suffer a similar fate.
A British movie with no screaming sirens, roaring helicopters and screeching tires. A break from Bruce Willis.
Very believable but beware of the ending. The Holcroft Covenant

Alive and Kicking

starring: Jason Flemyng, Antony Sher, Dorothy Tutin, Anthony Higgins, Bill Nighy
directed by: Nancy Meckler

Totally absent of any DVD "extras" but as usual a superior quality movie from Channel 4 in the U.K. Reminds me of MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE because of the type of soft ending, but also how the heroes have something that should be preventing them from being together, but doesn't, the relationship is established early on anyway. The lead "charismatic" actor, Jason Flemyng, playing the dancer Tonio, has AIDS and has seen a lover and a best friend both die of AIDS. After this he meets an AIDS therapist, and though they start off on the wrong foot, albeit film's cliche of "meet cute", the therapist pursues the dancer and the dancer quickly succumbs. But these aren't two-dimensional characters, but guys with personal histories and demons which both actors are fully capable of bringing ... Read More:
