Beetlejuice (P&S Slip)

starring: Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, Annie McEnroe, Maurice Page
directed by: Tim Burton

July 15, 1992
Maybe the definitive Burton film (or maybe more like a tie with `Edward Scissorhands'), `Beetlejuice' is a perfect representation of what Tim Burton is all about. It is loud and boisterous and at the same time dark and edgy. The film very much looks and feels like almost everything that comes out of the Burton factory, yet it is surprisingly fresh in a way. Maybe this has to do with the fact that it is one of his earlier works and so the colors and graphics are not as crisp, which adds an almost gothic layer to the films feel.

Then again, maybe it is the mere fact that Michael Keaton gives the best performance in any Burton film; ever.

The film follows Adam and Barbara as they learn to cope with life after death. ... Read More:

The Hand

starring: Richard Altman, Michael Caine, Pat Corley, Jack Evans (II), Scott Evans

December 13, 1993
The Hand DVD

It features a riveting performance by Michael Caine, a cartoonist, who, after losing his drawing hand in an auto accident caused by his wife who is "separating from him", spirals down into a psychological abyss from which he cannot escape. Oliver Stone's screenplay and direction is well-paced and crisp. The ending is unforeseen and shocking.

Highly recommended for fans of Michael Caine and psycho thrillers

Howling 2

starring: Christopher Lee, Annie McEnroe, Reb Brown, Marsha A. Hunt, Sybil Danning
directed by: Philippe Mora

August 25, 1998
Apparently, there was something much worse than Hard Rock Zombies, which thanks to this, is now #3 on my worst movies list (It used to be #1 btw. Howling 4 is still the second worse. Read my review on that for more details.) And like I said in my Howling 4 review, just because that was awful didn't mean I would be put off from finishing off the series, but now that I've stumbled upon this abomination, I'm becoming more reluctant. Remember back in the 80s when VHS covers where awesome and imaginative? Yeah. Howling II had a very awesome cover for when it was first released on home video in the 1980s, and to be truthful, for 8 years, I had been wanting to see this movie, especially since the movie's theme song got stuck in my head. Then in 2005, it finally came out ... Read More:

Childrens Toyshop VHS : True Stories

True Stories

starring: Jo Harvey Allen, Freeman Beatty, Evelyn Box, Kevin Box, Amy Buffington

November 10, 1997
The extremely influential band Talking Heads had begun to self-destruct by 1986, and in truth the film TRUE STORIES is more a David Byrne project than a Talking Heads project--but regardless of who-what-where-when it is a quietly bizarre satire of all things Texas, as any one who has spent time in a small Texas town can attest.

The town in question is Virgil, a community experiencing growing pains due to the advent of the computer industry and a new mall that is drawing folks away from the downtown area. The Texas Sesquicentennial provides a loose theme: promoted as a "Celebration Of Specialness," events include a fashion show, a parade, and most importantly a talent show. Along the way Byrne, acting as a sort of niave visitor-interviewer-narrator, more or less introduces us to the ... Read More:

Survivors

starring: Walter Matthau, Robin Williams, Jerry Reed, James Wainwright, Kristen Vigard
directed by: Michael Ritchie

January 30, 1996
This is one of the funniest movies of the 80's. Why it wasn't more popular is a mystery right up there with why a horrible show like "Seindfeld" was so popular and a brilliant comedy like "Titus" was done in 3 seasons.
The scene near the end where Robbin Williams and Jerry Reed are in a shootout in the woods will have you in tears.... Comedy brilliance.
